Why would that work at all,... since the game is around 6 MB,... and LM doesn't Read 6MB Roms,... . I can't even open my own game if it is too large.

Two bytes that unencrypt the ROM? Um, last I heard, LM rewrites the level data code to use something like basic XOR encryption, and saves the level data XOR'd. It's the same with ExGFX, I think also. Changing two bytes does not unlock the hack. It just fucks up your ROM.

I have a comparsion of two hex dumps of a trivially edited SMW ROM: one locked, one not. The two bytes near the name seem to be at 0x81BF and 0x81DB for LoROM. The block of data at the bottom looks like encrypted level data.

Even if you can unlock DW:TLC you can't open it with the public version of LM. The ExHiROM format that DW:TLC is in only available in the private version of LM.

As for the ethics of hacking games or tools, what is the difference between doing it to Nintendo and doing it other ROM hackers?

The difference is that Nintendo doesn't care.

Okay, here is what you can use to unlock a 1.00MB ROM that has not been edited. (so its the same as a normal 1MB rom, but its locked):

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v326/keikonium/LockCode.png

(copy + paste, duh)

EDIT: I forgot which side is the locked rom, (just look up the address in the hex editor and if the first address number is 00, then change to 01 and so on with the other digets).

This will restore ALL the graphics, and everything else.

And come to think of it, I dont think I have tried to unlock SDW:TLC...but I can't remember. I know I unlocked, LA, SMWX (anikiti (sp?) other hack), JJ's hack. But I never got anything out of them. Just seeing if this method would work on other hacks that have been edited. And the GFX were messed up, NOTHING WAS STOLEN SO DONT WORRY! I dont do this anymore anyway

It's not really unlocking it if all you can do is open it in Lunar Magic and not recover anything.

Nintendo DOES care, Glyph. Nintendo hates hates hates emulation, and as a result hates us, it simply doesn't have people with the time to aggressively after us when people offend them much more than ROM hacking communities, such as ROM sites.

Exactly. So not only would you need a different patch for each ROM, but the patch would have to contain all the un-encrypted data for each anyway. I'm sure it'd be easy enough to make a program that does it, but I doubt anyone would actually release it to the public.

Okay, correction. I don't care that Nintendo cares about rom hacking. And you probably don't much either or else you wouldn't be here. And, most likely, neither does anyone reading this post.

If a rom hacker finds out about someone stealing their graphics or hack or such, they just might take the time to point that out if it's in a forum and get that person banned or something. Yet if we banned everyone here who stole graphics or material from Nintendo, the forum would almost certainly collapse upon itself. (Being a rom hacking forum as it is.)

So I guess the reason using Nintendo material rather than a single hacker's material is different is because Nintendo isn't here to complain that their work has been stolen.

Ha ha, Nintendo. Sucks to be you.

So essentially, all you did was chart the differences between an unedited unlocked ROM and an unedited locked ROM? Um, wow. That was useful.

As has been iterated a few times in this thread, there is no way to create a super patch that unlocks every locked ROM. Nor, can you change one or two bytes and unlock the thing. Anyone who thinks otherwise is truly an idiot.

Well to be fair, what he did did make it so that Lunar Magic doesn't read it as locked, but...

Well, as some people say, it wont unlock every hack (altho I have been able to unlock 4-5 different hacks of different sizes). I wouldn't bother wasting your time anyway. It doesn't recover anything except for maby a few level layouts. It will just be alot easier to restart the hack then unlocking it

EDIT:

And the thing I posted ONLY unlocks 1MB unedited roms. Thats just to show the bytes that get changed when the hack gets locked by LM.

There are 2 bytes that I guess only disable the "this hack is locked" box that pops up when opened in LM that have worked for every hack I have tried to open. But enough of 'my method' people are saying it doesn't work, so nvm.

Your method works in the literal sense - Lunar Magic doesn't think it's locked. However, it doesn't make the level data readable by LM.

This has been discussed in the past, and it's just going around in circles now. Unlocking a hack is bad, and it's not easy, so don't bother trying. They are locked for a reason. Locked out of your own hack? You're screwed. Make a backup next time, and not on the same disk.

(sorry, I just grew tired of this subject very quickly the first time it came about, and I don't like seeing it revived again)
