For Christmas, I got a $250 US Bank Gift Card. I also got a $50 Best Buy gift card. On top of that, I had about $60 left from my own shopping. The 20GB 4G iPod is priced at $300, and with tax it is around $325. Of course, buying an iPod was out of the question immediately after Christmas. However, yesterday I bought it.

Now I am happy. I can finally get rid of the CD player that doesn't fit too well in my pocket. I've been re-ripping all my CDs into MPEG4 and putting it onto my sexyPod. Unfortunately, my Ogg Vorbis files don't do any good.

Ahh, aren't iPods great?

I have a 20Gb one too, and I love it. It keeps me sane on the bus trip to work. It also rekindled my love for music, which sometimes goes neglected when I'm too busy...

also, the clickwheel is fun

Don't kill yourself just yet. There's a rumor that a new version of QuickTime will be introduced shortly with OGG support, which would probably coincide with a new version of iTunes utilizing this - there's already an OGG file icon inside the Mac iTunes. And anything playable in stock iTunes is pretty much playable in the iPod, so I think there'll be a firmware update if this happens.

BTW, I'm curious, is there software available for FreeDOS that can work with media devices easily?

I will wait to eventually purchase an iPod - until the levy's officially removed on them in Canada. (Basically since you can use them to play copyrighted music, there's an extra "tax" on them. I think the tax is around $25-50 depending on the model.)

hmm... if QuickTime will have Ogg Vorbis support, then there'll probably be an update for iPod. Then I can be even more happy, if I haven't re-ripped all my discs by then.

There are USB drivers for DOS. uh... I'm not sure if any of them are specific to hardware. But an iPod under Linux looks just like a normal "Mass Storage Device", like my digital camera. so... you could hack together some software for DOS ported from the Linux tools already available to update the iTunesDB.

Got an Ipod mini for Christmas. 4 GB is actually more than I need right now anyway. Mine is only a bit more than half full at the moment (2.4 GB). Either way, you can't say I'm not getting mileage out of this baby...

I'm hoping to get the monstrous 60 gb version. My dream is to reconstruct my old music library. I need lots of storage.

You can run iTunes and QuickTime through CrossOver Office if you're so inclined. And of course there's alternative clients.

Someone at school today told me the dumbest idea that still could work. Get another iPod somehow and change the lanugage to Japanese and sell it for many more $$$ than it cost. I won't do it. Whoever falls into that anyway would kill me once he finds out it can be turned back into English.

Jesper: CrossOver Office is a proprietary version of Wine... you can't port it to DOS because of the properietary nature. Plus, if you had access to the source by any means, good luck porting it. The GUI would have to be re-written or X would have to be ported as well.

I know that CrossOver Office is like Wine, only expensive. But I think I read something about CrossOver running iTunes and Wine not.

I thought that you were going to use it on Linux. So that's why I suggested it.

Dude, be glad for that. It's to make up for the fact that in Canada you can legally download all the music you want.

Why would anyone pay extra for one in Japanese? I know some people are rather obsessed with Japan but one would think they'd still want their MP3 players to have menus in their native language. And for that matter, anyone smart enough to learn a second language would probably be smart enough to find the option.

Hey, all I know is that this one girl carried it around in her purse at my school, the purse happened to have a magnet for her metal strap, and um... well, she got mad... it was funny, actually.

Haha... found the perfect use for the iPod, besides music - PortableFirefox. Yay. Now as long as I have the USB cable with me, I can use my Firefox settings and crap on any computer at school. Can it get any better?
