Depends....

In the last 3 years, I reformat it around 8 times because of problems (Which turned out to be cause by my MotherBoard)

Edit: And what's with the computer related stuff in Craziness Domain?

I'm going to say I don't, because I do it less often that the poll allows. Just whenever Windoze gets fucked up so bad I have to re-install.

format c: won't work on my computer, because Linux has neither a format command nor a C drive. (Linux doesn't identify drives by letters like l00zd0ze does)

I did format in June, when I switched OS'es from l00zd0ze to Linux.

I never reformat my HD unless I am left with no other choice. Too much of a fucking hassle getting all your shit backed up, or redownloaded.

I guess its always nice to start fresh though.

That's gold! I'm gonna keep that one, if you don't mind...

I usually have to reformat at least once every 3 months, at most once a day for about a week, because I have a knack for breaking my 5+ year old compy whenever something new and shiny comes in contact with it...

CD and DVD burners sure come in handy for those occasions, however.

I chose the first option. Unless something's really messed up to the point where the computer barely works, I wouldn't format. I've got too much stuff that would need to be backed up, etc, and I don't have enough CDs or whatever to do that

The last time I tried to format a computer, it wouldn't work Got to 12% complete, then crashed (that was on our old computer)

I haven't needed to. Most of my PC's problems I can solve by doing a bit of spelunking and occasionally asking my friends what's wrong.

Anyways, I do it once in a great while, only when needed, and it hasn't been needed in 3 years.

Uh, I did like ten times in the command prompt today.

And dude, nothing happens. It needs to unmount the disk, and since it can't unmount a disk in use...

As a Windows user, I do prefer the way Linux names it's partions and harddrives. Thought it maybe is little more confusing for newbies...

And so, I still don't get the format c: jokes. You can only use that command while your running DOS from a disc.

You're not getting those jokes for the same reason you don't get the following:

Have you ever seen a plane crash? And the black box is always intact? And the rest of the plane is demolished? Why don't they just make the plane out of the same stuff as the black box?

The answer is that planes are made out of an alloy consisting of mostly aluminum, which is light, and the black box, to my understanding, is made out of mostly lead. If the planes were build in lead, or other dense metals, they wouldn't be able to get off the plane in the first place. Almost every sort of humor depends on someone being dumber than someone else and approaching something in a different way, and you've just hit that wall.

I would vote for "Never unless the whole system's screwed".

I know some people swear by giving a system a total wipe every few years, but I just can't do that. Too much setting up and that required... I'll only do that when there's no other choice.

I format-reinstall when I need to format-reinstall. Which isn't often. And even when the system borks itself, I will only install if I really HAVE to.

Ghosting is MUCH faster and less painful

I used to call my approach "laziness" but I've decided to paint it in a more positive light and call it "efficiency"
