I don't see how Norway's contribution is so special, Jiz. Sure, everyone donated lots, but overall it's still not as much as the US.

But Norway (and Sweden for that matter) are small countries. This is alot of money considering it's not as big as "Big brother".

And eh, Russia is a poor country. I think they "recovering" but... heh.

Apparently, I wonder how the world will be if a asteroid would soon hit earth. People seem to be so generous when it comes to natural disasters. Probably becuse of the fact that they're so unpreditacble...

Because the US is having a penis wagging competiton and using this more for public relations. The interviews with senators on the television have emphasized how good this will all be America's faltering foreign policies.

Norway, Sweden, SAUDI ARABIA, are giving big money for their GDP.

See what I mean? Damned if we do, damned if we don't. We can never win. No one is ever satisfied. Everyone will always bitch at us no matter what we do.

It does not matter why we're giving money or even how much. The important thing is that we're volunarily

------------------>GIVING MONEY<--------------------

I highlighted the key point there. That's ALL that need concern the world.

Welcome to being a superpower.

Oh, and as an active politician. Nothing in politics is voluntary. Something always moves your hand.

I'm still waiting for the States to match Japan.

I'm surprised since I think Russia's the only member of the G-8 who isn't helping out so far.

Leg, it really wouldn't be so bad if we weren't the only superpower right now.

Also.

How the hell did a "Those poor people" thread turn in to a "let's bash America" thread?

Actually, it would be funny if you were president. Because you'd realize the constraints that world politics have on America. Realpolitick is as strong today as it was during the Balance of Power in Europe.

Yea, I was in a 6.7 once (Northridge, California, 1994... I was on my way upstairs to grab a toy )... but considering that each 1.0 is 10x more powerful... that means that this is about 100x more powerful than that... yikes...

OMG! I lost a minute fraction of a second of daylight! Damn that tsunami bastard!

There'll always be the discussion of the beggar that has 10$ and donates 9$ versus the millionaire that donates 1000$. The millionaire donates most but the beggar gives most of what he possess.

I know that it would be impossible for the US to match many other countries in donations per GDP since they are bigger they also have more poverty and homeless people. But 1.2$~ per GDP?

So Craw, I quote again;
"Norway's pledge would come out to approximately $39.50 per citizen. The U.S. pledge of $350 million comes out to $1.19 per person."

Onto 'another' subject, I want to see a site that lists population donations, would be funny to see. And I also wonder what other countries have for campaigns, here we got like a little banner showing 20 times during all programs/movies on TV and also every now and then there's a commercial about donating. And just now, 2hours ago, all channels just stopped broadcasting (EVEN MTV, OMGOSH) because of the 3 minute silence in europe.

Actually, America gave MORE than the UK.

The attack on American aid doesn't rest solely on America, the UN rep. that stated his disappointment cast it upon all unaffected nations. On all rich nations.

I'm surprised that nobody said "Blame Canada" in this thread, yet.

I would've donated, but after I bought what I wanted (DS and stuff), I had no money left.

Can you imagine the kind of sheer arrogance and petulence it takes for a UN bureaucrat to bitch about how their supposed "authority" is being undermined when the largest natural disaster in the past decade needs immediate relief? The US, Australia, Japan and India all jumped in while the UN was still dragging its ass as usual. And let's not forget the fact that the vast majority of UN logistics for these things is supplied by USAID anyway. The UN has no authority as far as I'm concerned.

Re: the whole relative vs. absolute debate, I think there's a bit of conflation going on here. The poor person who gives $10 is more subjectively "generous" than the rich guy who gives $1000, but that doesn't change the fact that the rich guy is objectively doing more to help. I agree with Legion that motives are not the important thing here. What matters is what actually gets done.

Also, that fact that a particular government donated X% of its GDP says nothing whatsoever about the average generosity of its people. Little number games like the one Jizuko posted are prettty much meaningless if they're using public-sector numbers. To get an accurate picture you would have to add up all the private-sector charity given by people from the various countries and then divide by population.

Also, Ziff is correct about the constraints on leaders. I like to compare the role of the president to that of a guy steering a bumper car with the acceleration glued down: if you put all your weight behind it you can move it in a different direction, but it's still mostly going to go where it wants, and you're constantly bumping up against other countries that partially decide your course as well.
