Bleh. When are people going to understand that cloning their beloved pet is not going to recreate said pet? As others have already mentioned, the new cat will not have the same personality as the old one. If this woman expects that to be the case, it will be awfully unfair to the new cat as well. Will she love the cat less if it fails to follow in its predecessor's footsteps?

Add to that the fact that the new cat will likely have a bunch of problems and will likely live for a shorter period of time than the old cat, sadly. Cloning simply isn't at that level yet.

When I saw the story on CNN she said that the new cat had the same personality as the old one.

To which I say: It's a fucking cat.

Well, good for her if she feels that way. At least she's satisfied, although I would have to question for how long...

Yeah I remember hearing about the lady saying that the cat has the same personality as her old cat when I saw it on the news.

If she had one of those boring cats who doesn't do much of anything and the new one is boring as well, then that would explain it. Also, did the news story say how old the new cat was? If the new cat is young, it's probably too early to say whether or not it has the same personality. In my experience of raising a pair of littermates from the age of 8 weeks, it takes a while for a cat's personality to fully develop. Chester and Cookie were both quite similar when they were very small, but as they grew, they started to exhibit individual preferences and patterns of behavior. Cookie loves corrugated cardboard scratchers, but Chester prefers the carpet. (He hasn't managed to damage it any, but we were still happy when he started digging into the scratch mat we got recently. I think he likes it because it's so flat that it isn't really different from the rest of the floor.) Cookie just bats toy mice around, but Chester fetches them (nobody taught him - he just started one day). He loves to "play mousie" so much that he'll try to wake us up in the wee hours of the morn if he finds one lying around, or he'll sit downstairs and howl piteously for attention. Chester tends to be skittish around new people, hiding under the bed until he feels safe. (Oddly enough, he was more outgoing as a young kitten. Nothing traumatic happened to him - he just became shy.) Cookie is very friendly and outgoing. Even if she's just met you, she'll orbit your ankles and purr up a storm.

Oh, I'm pretty much aware that cats have EXTREMELY distinct personalities. The three that live in this house... well...

- One is a crybaby. She likes to look out the window and sniff around, and is the only one of the three who usually lies down without falling asleep. She'll cry when she wants to go downstairs or eat, and only goes outside on a leash as she doesn't have claws. Oh, and she purrs like a motor when petted.
- One is fairly mellow. She'll chase the crybaby sometimes (and vice versa) but generally is affectionate and likes to lie down on couches a lot. She'll go outside at times but likes to stay around the house during the winter. Probably the most inquisitive of the three.
- Finally, we have the bully. He likes to torment the other two whenever possible, although if he's sleeping you can forget it. He's quite the talker when he wants something, but can also sleep for hours on end. Tonight he got into a fight outside with a black cat; they both rolled around in the snow for a bit swinging at each other, then had a 5 minute face-to-face staredown. He likes attention but can be quite the brute.

Pretty different, hm?
