Haven't I seen this rant before? Several times? Being said by several different people? I believe I have. It's still true though. (edited by Kyouji Craw on 12-22-04 03:15 PM) |

I'm actually not at all bothered by Christmas being "commercialized" or "getting out of touch with Christianity" so to speak. The name "Christmas" in Swedish does not in any way attach to any specific religion. It's "Jul" (which, captain Obvious alert, is basically the same word as "Yule"). So even though we were sometimes forced to sing songs about baby Jesus etc in school, I've never felt like it's all Christian, or that someone's trying to force me to become Christian. My point of view can be summed up in this: As far as I'm concerned, "Jul" is a holiday derived from the winter solstice. We're - and I do say we, a lot of religions that celebrate in this manner have a holiday around this time of year no matter what - basically throwing a party in mid-winter, at the very (literally) darkest days of the year, to forget about worries, have a good time with friends and family and optionally have an excuse to give each other gifts. As far as I'm concerned, that pretty much tells the story that people are still able to be nice to each other. I couldn't care less if people celebrate their own holiday around this time of year, or celebrate the same holiday but under a different name. It's all about recharging your batteries, and we all know how to do that the best outselves. |

Random: Jon Stewart says that Christmas is a day for Christians to go to their services, and everyone else to stay at home, and think about the true meaning of the seperation of church and state.

Finally someone that complains things about people and Christmas, and that I can agree with. Personally I don't mind the relgious meaning of Christmas myself. But even relgious people celebrate it. And it's more about taking care each other than thinking on jesus after all. Yes there is capitalism involved. And? Christmas is far from being only capitalism for me... |

Anyways, wasn't Jesus born in September or August and we changed it to fit the Celtic Calander or something? |

Nah, it was changed to fit in with pagan traditions of worshipping the god Mithra, and the celebration of the winter solstice. I don't think it was every explicitly stated when he was born... (edited by Kyouji Craw on 12-22-04 10:27 PM) |

You can celebrate Christmas either as a secular holiday or as a fun holiday. Depends on your background/beliefs. I really don't notice the religion aspect except at mass... oh, and when they decide to show every Jesus/God movie (with the exception of The Ten Commandments) on Christmas Day either in the early afternoon or late at night. |

At least it's not as in-your-face as idiot rednecks, who God knows I have enough of here in Georgia. I try my best to accept people's opinions and never force any of my ideas on anyone else, but geez, I wish all the people who think that Christians 'are just stupid and should go away' basically, would be a little bit more respectful also. Though the general jist of what the dude's trying to say, at least at the beginning, I pretty much agree with. |

I think Jesper's got the right idea. I don't see Christmas as a religious thing, just as a celebration to sort of counter the depressant effects of Winter. (And because there isn't really any other time people celebrate such a big holiday all at once... Only their birthdays, which is individual to them and thus means very little to most people. And you usually don't get a day off. )

Four people in our house... three are not Christian (Mom and Dad are wiccan, I'm atheist/agnostic; I never can remember which word means specifically what)... we still celebrate Christmas. Not really any religious aspect, just the giving and the cheerfulness. That, and my mom for some unknown reason enjoys decorating. Yes, the actual work of putting the deorations up. Yes, I think some people might take it too far - using the example in that rant, a nativity scene, which is a religious symbol, does not need to be in a school. But there's nothing wrong with a Christmas tree, IMO. And go ahead and put your nativity scenes wherever else you want; your yard, window, living room, porch, wherever. Not a school. Then again, if schools did put a Christmas tree up, no matter what they called them, someone would demand it be taken down. |
