Can someone explain to me what asdf is? I was told it was a wierd internet phenomenon once, but I dunno...

I think it was something done by something awful as like a movie or something.

I tried a 'dict asdf' in Firefox, which just gave me a link to acronymfinder.com, so I went to the Urban Dictionary, did a search, and one of the results was a link, that I thought to be the closest to what you're wondering about.

asdf.com

I never heard anything about it being an internet phenomenon either

Awesome site.

It told me that:

asdf is the title
of
an unwritten zine.

asdf likes jkl;

asdf are the first
four letters you
learn in typing.

asdf
is
green?

I don't think they were the first four I learned in typing. Then again, I just jumped into using the keyboard.

But yeah. ASDF = First 4 letters on the second row of a keyboard. As the site says, on a Dvorak keyboard it's AOEU.

Bleh, asdf is nowhere near as cool as qwerty.

And yeah, asdfjkl; were the first letters I learned when typing properly. You get to type all kinds of stupid stuff like "dad sad alas fads dads falls sass;" and ... frankly, that brings back scary typing lesson memories, so enough of that.

Ugh, we had these little typing teaching machines back in elementary school. And my pinky always got tired because it wasn't strong enough to push down the shitty ; key.

AAAAGGGGHHHH STICKYBEAR TYPING

THE HORROR

(it was an old Apple IIc typing program we used back in elementary school; it would make a sudden, scary BEEP if you messed up, and we weren't allowed to turn the sound off...)

Mario Teaches Typing was probably the dullest Mario game out there - yes, that means duller than Mario is Missing. So, I'm in this castle, and I type the first ten sentences of the Gettysburg Adress, which takes freaking forever, because I'm 12 and it's in English and I have to read, type, read, type and not just type. Then I pass a Thwomp. I mean, whoop de doo.

I just looked at the keyboard and found whatever I needed, until I had it memorized. The hell with the 'right' way, my way's faster.

I used to play an old typing tutor on the old black and white macs, but I didn't know how to type then, so I just mashed the keyboard really fast.

I didn't learn to type with any software though.... we had lessons on it in the first year of high school. Most of us didn't learn much at all, but I did. However, I didn't really use that knowledge much in school... a little when typing assignments and things. My typing speed was pretty slow, but I could do it.

Still, remembering my typing lessons still weirds me out. I remember having to read from the blue booklets the teacher gave us, and getting sooo frustrated trying to type any of the sentences quickly.

Thankfully, touchtyping has become a subconscious act now...

ugh, stickybear typing... I remember that.

as for "dad sas lass" etc, I might point out that much more interesting sentences can be formed from the home keys in the Dvorak layout. indeed, I wish I had learned on that instead of on QWERTY...it makes so much more sense.

oh well.

I could type correctly when I was 5 or something but that was with a pen.

I had some grammar problems when I first came to the board. I don

Typing programs are satan spawn

They tried that in middle school, they put these bright orange covers over the keys and tried to get us to type. I'm so much faster typing my own way, typing the right way gets me a good....three words per minute? I've been typing my way since I was three, when I started using ccomputers so it takes for bloody ever to type the right way and it's a waste of time in my opinion.

The typing programs we had at high school were fairly simple - introduce a few new keys each lesson. No specific "way" to type, just get a high score.

Of course, said programs were CGA.

Well, if we're talking about the typing programs we used in school to learn how to type, I remember using one called 'Almena'. 'Typing Time' may or may not have been added after the first word; I can't remember right now

The first phrase you had to type was 'We went to the store.' That thing got typed so many times it wasn't even funny A friend who was in the same class I was got his best time down to two seconds Then there was the last long, multiple paragraphs thing on rivers and rainforests or something I never did complete that one, but if I can find the program again now, I'd try it again

Haha, I'm the same way with certain images, I started naming them as a bunch of random numbers (to evade any searches that may be done ), and it just kinda stuck. So now I have all like 547327678344.jpg, f4554-c-nt.png, sak-1w.psd etc.

I type way faster my own way, which is essentially just using my index fingers for everything. I don't even always keep them on their own side either... If I need to push two letters on one side I tend to just use both fingers.
Interestingly I also hold my pencils differently than most people, and that way is also easier than the 'right' way for me. Man was I ever glad when they stopped trying to cram their method down my throat... They'd put these big green triangle things on the pencils and I'd just kinda slide them up out of the way.
