... um.... just a question -- in the past, do other presidents frequently win Person of the Year?? (EDIT: Stupid question, got up to that section -- wow, Presidents win this a lot? Aren't there any other good People that could win this??)

... and I hope that this doesn't need to go in the other forum... but we shall see.

LOL, eh, I'm just not in the mood to enter the battle royale...

But I do find it weird that the President (current and past) has won so often... I should have a look and see what the other winners of this award were. The President seems like an obvious and popular choice for "Person of the Year" awards.... (regardless of what you may think of that President) There were likely people more deserving of such an accolade that weren't in such an obvious and public position.

Course, I don't know if I should take something from "Time" all that seriously anyways....

Well, keep in mind that it's not necessarily an accolade. It's a person or persons who have had an adverse affect on the world.

It should be an award of honor though. And it should be given to scientists and peacemakers.

It'd be sooo nice if it was. It'd be great to see the spotlight shone on the unsung heroes that are working to cure diseases and stuff like that.

Course, it probably isn't likely to sell anywhere near as many copies of Time....

I agree with that, but I'll say it should be given to someone who has made a significant positive impact having to do with some current issue. So, I guess scientists and peacemakers would fall into that category.

Bush's second Person of the Year award, the first one coming in 2000.

2000, 2004... I smell a pattern.

I dunno who else would be deserving this year but don't forget that Time is American based and that DOES determine who wins the awards (be they positive or negative). I'll at least give them credit for choosing a person this year. (Sorry, but "The American Soldier" is not a person and giving the award to a group of people/collective is asinine in my opinion. I would have thought they'd give it to Bush last year.)

Oh, and Canada's person of the year? Maher Arar.

...Who, you ask?

Syrian-born Maher Arar was detained while in a new York airport back in September 2002, on suspicion of involvement with the al Qaeda terror network.

He was then deported to Syria, where he was allegedly tortured before his release last year.

"If Arar is a terrorist, he is unlike any other. In contrast with other suspects dispatched to harsh justice, Arar didn't vanish into oblivion in his Middle East cell. Nor, after his release, did he recoil from public view," writes Time's Canadian Bureau Chief Steven Frank.

"Instead Arar, who has a modest home in Ottawa, has stepped into the spotlight, emerging as a vocal proponent of human rights in Canada, a symbol of how fear and injustice have permeated life in the West since 9/11."

Of course, the award of time magazine is entitled "Man of the year" with the description as followes; "The magazine gives the title to the person who had the greatest impact, good or bad, over the year.".

Who can argue that Bush did not have one of the, if not, biggest impact on the world as we know it? Of course, there are certain points and events to be acknoledged from other parts in the world, but there is no denying the fact that global media has been fixated in Iraq. Less now, but earlier in the year, it was plentiful.

I'm not surprised, Hitler almost got "Person of the century" award.

Once in the 80's, it was a computer that got a award.

I don't buy Time, I... loan it in the libary.

Not this year, though. I'm shocked to see that he was actually picked since so many people hate him and won't shut up about how much they hate him, making the rest of us going a bit nuts and tired of hearing the same thing over and over again.

I', happy that he won, and I'l leave it at that.
