Keep dreaming Leg, this will never happen.

Even if I wish it would.

#7 was the only thing I actually re-read when I noticed what it said the first time, and that is why I turned it into a pathetic little joke that wasn't funny in the least...

Really though people, if this was in general chat then you could defend it.

anyways, those are all good points but board reform is as impossible as getting the US to abandon the english system of measures

Somehow I doubt it. If that were the case, people who wanted on the ACS would frantically spam in an attempt to get higher than other people, not knowing how much is necessary.

When ACS was taken away, the posting still remained the same. Apparently the cries of "it causes too much spam" weren't very well founded. And yes, I know I was one of those people.

Oh!

I just remembered one more. Say someone asks a pretty simple question right? Then without fail, someone provide a link to Google and instructs them too look there.

Isn't that kind of counter-productive? I mean, it's a message board. You can say that it's pretty much just for opinions but couldn't you not just go to Google and type in "opinions on subject X"? Enough with the google!

Moot point.

Most instances of these scenarios are people asking a question wanting a straight answer. You won't find many threads where someone's asking "Does God exist?" and people tell him or her to Google it. If it's something that can easily be determined and is invariable - like an actual FACT - then yes. People can have opinions on which sole color the original T-Ford was offered in, but there's only one correct answer ("People can have the Model T in any color - so long as it's black"), and in most cases where people do provide Google links or pointers, the person that posed the question was asking for the factually correct answer and a Google search actually uncovers this.

There are, for the purposes of this post, two kinds of threads asking questions on this board: those asking for the real fact ("What's the density of iron?") and those asking for opinions ("Does God exist?", "Who should be the president of the USA?"). You were arguing that posting Google pointers is counter-productive. I'm arguing that it's not.

My argument is that in the absolute majority of the cases, the Google pointers are provided in the threads asking for a fact, not for an opinion. If you're asking for a fact, the best outcome (the most productive one) is getting the right answer, the real fact. If the right answer is readily available by searching with Google, all the better. (Nothing's stopping the people in the thread from having a discussion about the actual fact later on, if that's what you're arguing.)

Whoah, no no no no.

I used "opinions" as an example.

If someone posts something that can easily be answered by a Google search such as "What is the capital of Belgium?", then what's the point of responding only with "Use google."? The thread has already been made. The best thing to do would just be to answer the question.

But giving them the answer like this would make them lazy, no?
People should ask question after they searched by themselves, or when they know they won't find anything (what that person's searching uses too many keywords).

A fact is easily found on Google.

I know, I'm not saying they shouldn't. But you can't control that. What I'm talking about is only AFTER a thread like that is posted. Nothing more.

I'd most likely give them an answer, but also ask them if they looked on google, and tell them that the answer to their question appeared within one of the first few pages of results. You could also tell them to look on google next time they had a question, and if they couldn't find the answer, then to go ahead and ask at the board.

Actually, Kitten Yiffer was RIGHT about the ACS in case anyone was wondering.

The ACS really isn't a problem right now, and there were no long-term benefits that came with canning it - so it's basically a "bonus" on the board. Plus until recently, activity has been pretty sad otherwise.

The Google thing has a place sometimes.

Some questions can only really be answered with links to Google.

Say somebody says that they need to do an assignment on World War II for school. I don't know about you guys, but I don't know enough about WWII to consider myself a good source for this information, so I'd likely link to a Google Search about it, and advise that while I don't know enough about the topic, the sites on the first page look interesting. (I'd probably also ask if they needed to know anything specific about WWII, or just general information)

Course, sometimes people post Google links to be obnoxious, but sometimes it really is the best answer.

well, i think some people are too lazy to go googling..that is why they post here hoping that someone gives them the answer...then again, maybe they did try googling first before posting... because they wouldn't post on a message board for a question they needed a quick answer to... after all, sometimes google doesn't give you what you want as Tarale points out...
