For some reason, some types of soda use a 1-liter bottle that takes a cap of the same size as the ones for the 20-oz. and 2-liter size, but other types of soda use a 1-liter bottle that takes a cap of a different size...can anyone here explain why?

I can't, the cap sizes are the same here, for... well, everything.

What stuff has a different size?

;; And um.... don't you have something better to do than ponder the cap sizes of soda bottles? Or is it just a slow day today..

Most liter bottles use the bigger cap size nowadays. My guess is they did it so you'd drink it faster and have to buy another one sooner...

But then, I really never drink directly from the one liter sodas. So that logic... well.

Drinking through a straw make the drink lasting longer, so there is some logic to that anyway. Bigger the entry, faster it goes...

As my Dad works in a canning factory (He makes Cans for most of the drinks manufacturers in the entire country, inclusing Coke and Pepsi e.t.c). I'll answer this one

The answer's really quite simple....

The Cap and the bottle are made in different places. It's also more cost effective to make 3,000,000 of one size cap than 1,500,000 of one and 1,500,00 of another, as changing sizes is mostly done using the same machine but changing the die, which means you have to power down, wait for it to cool, change the die, fire the machine up again and then start production.
So now you know.

That doesn't explain why there would be different sizes in the first place. All the bottles I've ever seen used the same size.

So wait, why are 1 Liter caps bigger, then? Shouldn't they be the same size as 20 oz and 2 Liter caps, following that logic?

We really only have one plastic cap size here in Sweden which holds true for half-liter bottles, 1.5-liter bottles and those weird 2-liter Coke bottles.

If anyone within the next week claims that this forum is not interesting or wide enough, I'll point to some ROM hacking threads, and then to the ACS thread, and then to this thread, and then I'll laugh. Just so you know.

I'm pretty sure it's so you drink it faster. You remember when they brought out the bigger openings on coke and pepsi cans. Now the openings are like 2 times as big as they were 10 years ago, and they used the same logic, bigger opening, faster drinking, more sodas consumed. They don't have hte large openings on 2 liter bottles, cause frankly, most people don't drink from the bottle. The 20 oz ones don't have it cause then the bottle would be very wierdly shaped. The 1 liter is the only one capable of having an opening like that so they use it on that one.

Yes, but you think they would do it anyway just to avoid the cost and hassle of making 2 sizes of lids.
Come to think of it I have seen 1-litre and 600ml bottles with bigger openings, but they weren't pop. Generally fruit juice.

Wonder if that's the idea behind Pepsi's Ipod giveaway? Supposedly people drink more pop when they're listening to loud music.

And supposedly people buy more of something when they can get something free from buying the thing.

I noticed the wider soda can openings. They used to be some neat new thing, but now everything save for Chai Tea in a can has it.

And, well, since I drink lots of Dr. Pepper, it seems to result in me drinking more of it... heck... sometimes I'd drink an entire can subconsiously, then try to drink from it and be surprised that there's nothing there.

Of course, I drink too much of the stuff. My computer area gets littered with those cans... since my laptop is always on the Dinner table, I'm able to eat all my meals at the table :p

But anyway, why do shasta liter bottles have those huge caps on them? They're horrible... you try pouring those, you spill it everywhere!

I think you may have misread the post. It's about those larger caps on the liter bottles, nothing to do with cans.

Anyway, I don't well see how you could spill stuff everywhere unless you had pretty poor manual dexterity... My mother has a pretty bad hand tremor and she still has no problem pouring stuff.

Well, some stuff sucks for pouring out of. Like this glass I have at school. But out of cans and bottles should be no problem.

Erm...another thing I've been wondering is: Why is the size of a 1-liter soda bottle's cap different between different brands of soda?

Probably because they're made in different factories and don't have a set standard.

I've always wondered about this :\. This kinda like why straw sizes can differ drastically sometimes.

Bottle cap sizes are the same here.. although I've noticed that soda can "holes" can differ in size (especially on the evil German ones :O!)
