Ever notice how the second game of a Video Game series is unique? here are a couple of examples, please add to the list: SMB2 Castelvania 2 Double dragon 2 (not so much different as it is better) Ninja Gaiden 2 (same as DD2) TMNT2 (not fair to say. the third installment is a rip off of the second, thus not different. But it is seen as the more popular of the tmnt games for the NES. In it's time at any rate. TMNT 1 gets more attention nowadays if at all.) Mortal Kombat 2 (although I prefer MK3) Street fighter 2 (not fair to list as there are a dozen SF2 editions) Zelda 2 |

I never realized that I'd have to guess that happens because they (the game companies) want to do something different than they did the first time, but with the same characters, etc. SMB2 might not belong there, since the original game (Doki Doki Panic) wasn't intended to be a Mario game from the start, but it could still very well belong in the list Also, there was an actual version of SMB2 that was released in Japan, that was like the original Mario. Take a look here. I'll add some of my own as I can think of them |

alitnil: I see your point but "the second game was better" doesn't seem to be the same thing at all, so I don't consider double dragon and ninja gaiden to be examples. Also, I submit Super Mario World 2 (Yoshi's Island). Ziff: yes, although I have no idea if it was altered at all for SMAS aside from the porting process. =o |

Originally posted by Zem Well, I suppose I should reword myself there. Instead of being "better" it could also be seen as "more popular", as in, this particular game overshadowed the other games of that series. This overshadow means it can still be referred to as the black sheep in that there doesn't seem to be a reason why it's so much more popular. also MM2 |

Final Fantasy 2, mainly for the extremely unique (and pretty much one-off) levelling system. You could also make an argument for Metroid 2 being unique because it was the only game in the series where the goal was to defeat all Metroids in a given area, with the way to the next area only being opened up (drained of lava) when said objective occured. |

Originally posted by ZiffskiYeah, and the SMB2 we have is a graphical modifacation of Doki Doki Panic, which I have tested. The diffrents are mostly graphical. The lost levels was insanly hard, but it's still beyond me why they didn't release it here. |

Because it was insanely hard, and they thought (perhaps rightly so) that American buyers would get fed up and not like the game as much. | |||

Originally posted by NSNick Within light of this, I find it funny that the Japanese Battletoads is much EASIER than the American version. Anyway, on-topic, notice how most of those series are Nintendo series. So yeah, I'd put the U.S. SMB 2 in there, as well as Castlevania 2 and Zelda 2. I guess you'd make the case for Metroid 2 as well, though I'd argue that the core gameplay is still Metroid. TMNT 2, ehhh...yeah, it's different from the first, but future games in the series used that as the template rather than the first game (Which differentiates it from the rest of the games on my list). As for the rest, most are simply beefed up versions of the first game in the series (SFII and MKII being the most obvious examples), not really "unique" in their respective series. |

Let's also keep in mind how Mario Kart 64, the second Mario Kart game, was the first to have a true Y-coordinate (true 3D instead of being totally flat). Then MKSC was flat again, and MKDD was of course 3D. Although I guess you might not count that since it's really just due to hardware limitations, but it IS true. |

Sometimes it is the third in the series that really changes things. SSX, DOOM, Grand Theft Auto, etc. |

Originally posted by alitnil I disagree with these two. To begin, it's not really clear if TMNT1 was the first TMNT game, since the arcade game came out the same year, but we'll consider the arcade game the second for the sake of arguement and because it was labled as TMNT2: The Arcade Game when it was ported to the NES a year later. Anyway, TMNT3: The Manhattan Project (NES), TMNT4: Turtles in Time (Arcade/SNES), and TMNT: The Hyperstone Heist (Genesis) all used game mechanics first introduced in TMNT2. TMNT: Fall of the Foot Clan and TMNT2: Back From the Sewers (both Gameboy) used a slightly different (and not as good) beat-em-up style. TMNT3: Radical Rescue (Gameboy) used a unique mixture of gameplay, somewhere between the original NES title, the previous Gameboy titles, and... Metroid (only thing I can think of to fit it) where you go around somewhat maze-like levels in a platforming beat-em-up style with a map on the pause menu (which would be alot more helpfull if it showed the location of doors). You start off with only Mikey and have to find and rescue the other three turtles. Then there's the three different Tournament Fighters games (SNES, NES, and Genesis, in order from best to worst). Though they share the same title and boxart, they're far from the same game. FAR from it. Most unique: TMNT3: Radical Rescue Okay, and for the Street Figher games, the original Street Fighter is the most unique. And the most crappy. |

I'd like to rule out smw and smw2 for the reason that I dont really count a game series a "series" until it hits a third game. Then it's just a sequel. Okay, you guys win about MK2 and SF2, but it's still the second game of the series and they are responsible for making the series more ubiquitous. COME ON. WHADDAYA SAY? I'd also like to rule out games like the mario cart series for the fact that they are each on different sytems (metroid also). Generally speaking, once a series makes it to a new system, it tends to become a new series (MegaMan/MMX & SMB/SML/SMW) oh yeah.. Twisted metal 2 is to car combat as Tomb Raider 2 is to big boobed adventure |

I wouldn't rule out a series that spans multiple consoles - it's extremely rare these days to see a series that stays on one console for its entire life. (The Jax series would be one example at the moment.) |
