I'd been wanting to hack Bases Loaded for a long time, and I finally found out where the game stores the palette entries for the uniform colors -- not from the palette display in nesticle, since my PC doesn't run that, but rather from using the memory viewer in NesterJ0.23 and spotting (in particular) Hawaii's funky beige uniforms, which are color 37.

So now I need some ideas on which teams to recreate. I'm going to do the 12 Japanese teams for 2004 in one hack, and then maybe MLB teams in another, but there doesn't seem to be a way to increase the number of teams, so only one league could be re-created. How about MLB teams from around 1990, when this game was at its peak?

Well, you've unintentionally stolen my idea (Japanese leagues). Are there 12 teams between both leagues? Thought it was something like nine now. There's other Asian leagues too, no? Korean and Taiwanese.

But I get exclusive drilling rights on a couple of minor leagues around here. (Okay, maybe not.)

I'm checking right now to see when MLB had 12 or 24 teams. Maybe you could cobble together a Negro... wait, no, I think I'll be doing that. Even got the year and everything in mind.

Hrm. Well, if you cut off at 1976, you'd have 12 AL teams (minus the Mariners, Blue Jays, and Devil Rays). You'll also conveniently have 12 NL teams, since you'll only drop the Rockies, Marlins, and Diamondbacks. Brewers will be in the AL, though. 1990? There were 14 AL teams and 12 NL teams (AL's post-1976 expansion came in 1977 and 1998, while the NL expanded in 1993 and 1998). This was gleaned from baseball-almanac.com.

So, if you're going to do a matched set of hacks (one per league from the last year before expansion pushed 'em over 12 teams) you're looking at these lineups:

AL (1976):
Baltimore Orioles
Boston Red Sox
California Angels
Chicago White Sox
Cleveland Indians
Detroit Tigers
Kansas City Royals
Milwaukee Brewers
Minnesota Twins
New York Yankees
Oakland A's
Texas Rangers

NL (1992):
Atlanta Braves
Chicago Cubs
Cincinnati Reds
Houston Astros
Los Angeles Dodgers
Montreal Expos
New York Mets
Philadelphia Phillies
Pittsburgh Pirates
San Diego Padres
San Francisco Giants
St. Louis Cardinals

No one relocated between 1977 and 1993, so those would be the same, even if you did a 1976 NL hack. Think you could do a little something with that?

I would like to see a Bases Loaded hack, This game used to give countless hours of fun, especially when I used to gamble play with friends & family & win. To think I was 13 at the time.

I managed to insert the 2004 Hanshin Tigers into the game (they left the katakana font intact so I used that). It took a surprisingly long time to line up the "menu" uniform numbers with the "graphic" uniform numbers.

And -- now that I've isolated that stat -- there will be many more players willing to charge the mound and smack the pitcher around after getting hit in the head with a pitch!

BL1 and 2 are the best IMO. I never could get the hang of fielding in tha last two games, where it's from a center-field perspective. More realistic but harder to handle. Even BL2 is a nightmare when a fly ball comes at you.

I might just pick 12 of the best teams from after 2000 and call it "Bases Loaded: 21st Century Edition". If only there were a way to add more teams (I know nothing of ASM hacking -- if I did, we'd be able to change the starting lineups before the game, make edit teams, etc., etc.)

Now I've got uniform colors, numbers, and faces edited, as well as stats. The next step is to edit those people who stand behing home plate watching the game. I'm going to arrange it so that there are more of them when one of the good pitchers comes in. BTW, there will be several more "big" pitchers this time around -- before, each team had one or two. In the original version, most of the pitchers were like that, and there were also underhand guys. If I can sort that graphic out, I'll import it.

Problems so far: the game seems to store player positions (as displayed on the scoreboard) somewhere other than with the player data. So I've got George Arias at first base but the game thinks he's in the outfield because Boston's 6th batter is an outfielder.

I also can't seem to edit the color used for the folds in the uniforms for player graphics. This is gray for everyone, but I want to change it since it looks ugly if you make black uniforms.

If it's screenshots you desire, it's screenshots you shall have!

Six of them are here:

www.geocities.com/heiankyo794/basesloadedNPB05.png

This is for the Nippon Pro Baseball 2005 version, so the Hanshin Tigers player names are in katakana (restored from the Japanese version to the superior US game).

As of now it's mostly color, graphic, and data hacks. I didn't mention it on the screenshot caption, but the "42" and "92" uniform graphics are new -- no one wore these numbers in Bases Loaded, but the Tigers now have them, so they're in.

I'm leaning towards just picking twelve division-winning MLB teams from the late '80s, if nobody minds.

More editing and screenshots to come!

Is anyone interested in the hex addresses of the stuff I've found? Might be useful to fellow BL hackers.
