You know those things they have on top of doors to keep them from being slammed? They should put those on cars; it would have to be on the bottom of the door though because, if it was on the top, it would result in even more awkwardness than usual in trying to get in and out... (I just remembered one time when I slammed a car door hard enough to shatter the window, which was all the way down. )

I'm confused myself. I've never seen this "prevent-door-from-slamming" thing. And usually you have to slam car doors in order for them to close.

Actually, maybe "preventing the door from slamming" really isn't a very good description of its function...what it actually does is slow the door down while it's closing.

Hmmm. That would mean that the device would need to be a bit more lenient about how fast it lets the door close.

Nah...what they need is a mechanism that prevents the keys from being locked in the car. Shouldn't be too hard, all they'd need to do is make it so that the door physically can't be closed all the way if it's locked, you would have to first close and then lock it.

No bcause then if your door is broke and you are going down the high way your car door could fly open.

If the lock mechanism on your door is broken that can happen anyway though :x

actually, making the door be unlocked to close it would be great. and it would be a problem if it broke except for the problem's it causes now when it's broke. Think of it like a dead bolt, if it's on, you can't close a regual door, but when it's off, you close it and then lock it. It's like there's an obstruction when it's locked and then the usuall sealing mechanisms when it's closed. If that's what you were getting at.

That's like saying you shouldn't use cars at all, because if they break down it could be dangerous. You can't base the quality of a product on the performance of a defective model.

It's a good concept though. A lot of cars will sound a buzzer any time the key is in but turned off. They should just use that to control the door lock, so that the door won't close if the key is in and the engine/electrical system isn't running (usually you can turn just the electronics on by turning it back one click). So you get out and forget the key, door stays open. You get in, and once you've actually started the engine you can close/lock it.

My dad forgot his keys in the car one time and the windows were almost all the way up. I nearly broke my arm trying to reack to unlock it, but in the end I think he used a coat-hanger or something. It was hilarious.

I think that would be an excellent idea, of course.

Erm...that would still allow the keys to get locked in the car while the car is running.

My car wont let you close the doors when they are locked. It does close, but it unlocks itself. You have to lock it with your key. I think it was made that way.....its a 94 mercury sable. What do yall all have?

Well, now that you ask, and since I never tire of showing off my car...

And it's virtually impossible for me to lock my keys inside my car, since the doors only lock from the outside, and they require the key to lock them.

And how stupid do you have to be to park your car, get out, and lock the door, without ever remembering to turn the engine off?

I don't think the idea of the door unlocking itself is such a good one. If it won't close sure, you'll know you must have forgot. But imagine having left the keys inside, then closing the door and thinking it's locked... Now the keys are in the ignition and the door is unlocked. Not a good way to leave a car!

Well, one day I was really tired. I went to school. Parked the car. Went to class. After classes were over, i realized my keys werent in my pocket. I got to my car, and heard it running. It had been sitting in the parking lot for a good two hours running the whole time. Amazingly enough, it only ate 1/16 of my gas. I was surprised no one had taken it.

In my family, everyone leaves the keys to the car in the car when we're parked in the driveway because we have a narrow entry so in case someone's car needs to be moved by someone else the keys are left in the car.
This becomes a problem with my fianc
