So I was editing a ROM in Eggvine (ripping BGs, and editing the levels to fit ), and when I went to play it, for some reason the file window had refreshed and was only showing 60 of the 415 files. I refreshed manually, but I didn't want to go through the list to find the ROM, so I just set it to list by most recently modified. Not there. I browse around in the list... Oh, here it is! Why's it way up here?

Perhaps this explains it:

Now how the hell did that happen? I know EV is buggy but it shouldn't be manually setting the date.

How is Winodows dumb? You know, computers only do what you tell them to do. I'm surprised you didn't know that.

I'm not 100% sure about this, but I think the reason why some files show up as having been modified before they were created is because the "date modified" info is stored within the file, whereas the "date created" info is not, and the "date modified" info isn't changed when the file is copied. (In fact, in MS-DOS, the "date created" info didn't seem to even be stored at all...)

(edit: I don't think I explained that very well...)

That explains why after an crash, all files was created 1 January 1980. I bet there was a filesystem screwup, thought nothing else happened.

Quite funny seeing so many files being so old.

That could easily have been faked, you can set dates manually. This one just kinda popped up out of the blue.

And no, having been a copy didn't have to do with it. When I copied it the 'created' date was set to the time I'd done so. I modified the file a few times, and it was alright, then this just happened.

Mutation, datestamps are stored in the filesystem tables, not the files. If I download stuff, stuff's Creation date's always now.

I live very far in the future according to my old computer. It is bust and says we live 200 years in the future. And the clock never changes.

edit:: I don't know how it works, this computer only goes up to 2099.

I have a ROM created on that date too, but I'm not sure what it is.

Well yeah. A comet was about to hit us but then lots of scientists cryogenically froze the earth for 95 years to avoid the inhabitants taking damage. I'm the only one who remembers.

Either that or, y'know, it's the guy who made the thing's fault.

This is not a bug. You copied the file. The copy was created on the date labelled "Creation Date". The original's modified time is preserved, however.

But I modified the copy afterward, several times. This happened after one of those modifications.

Because M$'s definition of infinity is different than the standard definition. You didn't expect them to keep with standards did you?

Yeah, that's what I thought, thanks for confirming this.

Actually, I think Linux only saves the last modification time, and not the creation time...
