Anything I record with Sound Recorder comes out horrible, even if it's just recording from line out. Is there a small program that can do it better or does my sound card just suck?

It's most likely your sound card. I wouldn't say it's small but you can test it with Audacity. If it still sucks, it's your card. (edited by FreeDOS on 12-02-04 08:19 PM) |

But I don't want an old version, I want the current one hosted on something a little faster, which I'm not seeing there.

Then get 1.2.3. Audacity is hosted by SourceForge, so every version released is there plus info for CVS access to get the latest development code.

Uh, yeah... *Googles* Bah, this isn't doing it. It's a far better quality (doesn't sound like a really old tape anymore ) but there's this nasty buzzing sound I can't seem to get rid of. I'm trying to record from my Gamecube using the following hookup: GCN -> Stereo -> Computer -> Headphones (I'd bypass the stereo altogether if I had a female A/V to stereo jack cable, but noooo). I'd also like to record from the stereo itself at some point. (Making a big jump, tape to MP3. ) Any suggestions? The Gamecube itself sounds good this way (but REALLY quiet), but the recording, after being amplified to 20DB to make it actually hearable, has that damn buzzing. Though I did find a way to exploit the Gamecube's anti-piracy system to get a clean recording from Mario Kart (no engine sounds OR the pause sound): Open the disc cover when the timer is at less than one second (which is when the music starts), then pause at >1 second before the "close the damn door" message comes up. Since the music is streamed it won't play while the lid is open, and once you close it (after the verification which takes a whopping 8 seconds!) the music starts well after the pause sound has stopped. |

I think the stereo might have something to do with the noise. See, you're basically amplifying the sound twice, once at the stereo, and once at the computer, so naturally it's going to amplify any background noise (which such a complicated setup is sure to introduce) present in the signal. My only recommendation is to buy that adapter cable you mentioned. That way, you'll be getting clean, line-level sound straight from the source. |

I'll look into that, but this isn't exactly a cheap stereo. It shouldn't be degrading the sound quality too much. (Though come to think of it, maybe I should replace that one cable, it's probably rather old.) |
