So um... I just bought a cd that says its SACD... apparently that means "Super Audio CD" and I'm like "what's so super about it? doesn't sound much different" and I googled it and SACD is a competitor for DVD-Audio format for higher resolution audio. I'm just curious, does anyone actually -notice- a difference between these new formats and a standard cd?

You need an actual SACD player to listen to it correctly.

I'm not sure if it's the case with all SACDs ('cos I know almost nothing about the format), but in the case of the deluxe edition of NIN's The Downward Spiral, the album's in 5.1 surround. It's a hybrid disc though, so it's an SACD and a CD, so you can still play it in normal CD players. There's also a DVD-A version of the album, which is also in 5.1.

These are from 5 mins googling.
SACD: http://www.superaudio-cd.com/technology_explained/detailed_information/whitepaper.pdf
DVD-A: http://searchstorage.techtarget.com/sDefinition/0,,sid5_gci510035,00.html
DVD-A vs SACD: http://sound.westhost.com/cd-sacd-dvda.htm

SACD: Encoded differently to regular CD's, lower bitrate (about 1bit) and stupidly high samplerate (about 192kHz way more that needed for a conventional CD) This allows the filesize to be smaller than a regular CD, hence the avalibility of 5.1. But you need a special player to take advantage of the 5.1ness. And in 5.1 mode it pales in comparison to normal CD's, the top end frequencies are ruined and don't sound nearly as good. Nearly all SACD's will play in stereo on a normal CD player. They are usualy marked "Hybrid CD" if they do.

DVD-A: Uses 96kHz sampling and 24bit resolution. Double CD quality and being on a DVD , it has plenty of room to spare for extra tracks (esp if its a dvd-9!). Sounds abso-bloody-lutely amazing in 5.1! Because theres it's double the quality of normal CD there are more transient sounds that can be captured and heard. DVD-A's will play on nearly every single DVD player made. And they beat SACD hands down, no contest!

Hope that helped!
