Today is the World AIDS Day. According to a pamphlet handed out at school today, more than 10 000 are infected with HIV/AIDS every day. Despite of the astounding number, despite the fact that AIDS is becoming the new black plague, parents of schoolchildren in many countries refuse to let their kids have sex ed, thinking everything will be alright if they never learn how to protect themselves. In African countries, where the problem is the biggest, Catholic leaders ban condoms from being used, saying it is offensive to God. All over the world, people are infected, without even knowing it. The only way to battle AIDS is by teaching safe sex, and practicing it, yet this seems to be offensive to some, for reasons I cannot fathom.

And to think, all it will take is 10 million dollars of US currency for medicine to cut the number of new AIDS transmissions in half for Africa, and a billion dollars to eradicate it from that continent.

Oh, and Brazilian scientists just tested an AIDS vaccine with an 80% success rate.

promising news in the fight against AIDS... as for the catholics forbidding condoms, I wonder what is their plan for stopping spread of AIDS, abstinence? Well, that works if their followers are dedicated enough...

The Vatican decided to tamper where it really shouldn't and released a report saying that condoms can't stop the spread of AIDS. The African bishops disseminated the information to their parishoners.

If we did that, people would still find a reason to bitch at us somehow, someway.

"What did that virus ever do to you? Hate mongers!!!"

But why us though? Why does it have to be our money? Why not someone else? We do plenty for foreign aid as it is. I'm not saying we shouldn't, I'm just wondering why you emphasized on us.

US currency is the general world currency.

And I'm quoting Steven Lewis on those numbers.

Thanks to Google I found this out. We gotta love Google...

In my personal opinion, teenagers are gonna have sex probably anyway. I don't say they should promote sex, but they should promote usage of Condomns. Hell the campagings here are far from promoting sex.

But sex is of course not the only way the disease spread in...

You know, the war in Iraq could have funded 13 years of AIDS research .

Yes! I mean, teaching abstinence is fine and all, but kids also need to be taught what to do if they have sex before they're married.

Where the hell does this figure come from? The U.S. has already pledged hundreds of millions to Africa for this purpose, I believe. What would 10 million more do?

So what? I'm sure how ever much money is being dumped into cancer research would do about the same thing to. What's your point?

I think his point was something along the line of

"if Bush hadn't started his war for [insert your other reason here], then he would have had all that money to spend elsewhere"

I think.... and as much as I agree.... he wouldn't have spent it that way.... but it's still a point to make

Again, what's the point?

It's like saying "If we would have never spent all that money on cancer research, we would could have used it for AIDS research."

No, that is their total budget that goes to funding beauracratic endevours. It is unfocused and the "aid" goes to the corrupted government in the region. It never reaches the people. 10 million dollars given to a NGO would slow the progress of AIDS considerably.

And had you read the thread hgallahah you would've noticed the name "Steven Lewis" and the words "And I'm quoting...On those numbers" (Ziff, 2004, post 1798)

(Finally something I know a little about)

Ziff makes a good point, about how the money never reaches the people, all the governments take the money and don't help the people. (This is why you have problems in Sudan) If you give it to an organization that's purpose is to do whatever, they'll do it (or lose funding) and it will work much better than us just donating to some country that won't do anything with the money. The UNFPA, for example, would do a better job with building the clinics and everything in Afghanistan than the Afghan government would if we just gave them the money directly.

(UNFPA stands for United Nations Population Fund... makes no sense to me...)

This may be a little off topic, but...The people who really get on my nerves are those who actually say "Why should America spend that much money on OTHER countries?" First of all, diseases like AIDS CAN and DO hit America in large numbers. Second, diseases like malaria, more specifically the Anopheles strain, need more money and research put into them. It's a mutating disease and if it's not controlled, it can spread to Europe and even in the US and Canada and decimate a large percentage of the world's population, infected a larger amount of other people.

Well yeah, that's why we do spend money on other countries for AIDS research.

And all your guys pal Bush gave a shitload of money to Africa...uh...I forgot exactly when. But it wasn't too long ago. But of course you guys were probably to busy talking about the pretzel incident again to even notice.

I don't know if that's true or not, but let's just say it is. This is my response:

"Oh, yeah. You're right. We should have just kept it to ourselves."

It doesn't matter how we give it, or who we give it to. We still made the conscious choice to GIVE. Why do you people always have to put every positive thing we do in a negative light? Seriously, why?

If the US send every non-US citizen 1000 dollars, I swear people would be like "Oh sure, NOW you give us money when your dollar is at the lowest it's been in years. YOU INGRATES!"
