Another one of these threads... allow me to provide my opinion on all three and note that I'm not voting for any of them.

Gamecube: Sad. After the Nintendo 64, I expected Nintendo to improve. They did, but not by much. This system had great potential, but because of a gross lack of third-party support (Nintendo themselves can only do so much) there are few games worth playing. In addition, most games poorly use the controller. The controller is at fault here, however, as the layout is designed so it works great with some games. I'd prefer a good controller that works with all games over a great controller that only works for some. =/

PS2: Can't say much, though I applaud Sony on putting backward compatibility in. It's the main reason I'm getting one soon, as my old Playstation's having some problems lately. That, and the controller layout on the PS2 is the best of the bunch. And people, will you shut the fuck up about the graphics? I've heard enough complaints about the damn graphics, and the next complaint I hear about it might result in my throwing an Xbox at you. And we all know that's a brick. Graphics aren't everything. If they were, would some people still be playing NES games on their computers?

Xbox: So you call it a brick. Frankly, I don't care how damn big the console is. Controller too big? They make smaller ones. My only complaint about this console is the black and white buttons. Their placement is a little awkward - it's very possible to have six easily-reachable buttons on one side of the controller, the N64 proved that. Beyond that, no complaints.

Power Stone 2 was dodgy.

Xbox rules the current generation of consoles. Nintendo gets second.

Gamecube is my favourite. I also have a PS2 (I wasn't really expecting it, just got it for Christmas ), which I only have a few boring games for and hence never use, but still enjoy having around for the DVD playing and potential of actually finding some good games for it. (I know there's plenty, just nobody has them around here. ) And I'm not a big Xbox fan but I'd buy one for 50 bucks or so. Even if it is just a computer in a heavy box, it does have some nice features like custom soundtracks and those special connectors on the controllers that come out instead of the cord breaking. (Of course, Nintendo's just plain don't break, but this is M$. ) There's just not enough games that I care about. Shooters and beach volleyball pretty much make up its library. (And yes, I do hate the controller, but I generally don't mention that since you can get better ones.)

Initially, I wouldn't have touched a PS2 or Xbox due to hardware issues and lack of decent games, but both have mostly fixed that up. There's more good games and you rarely hear of PS2s burning out or Xboxes overheating anymore. Still, Gamecube has the best games IMO, which is what counts.

I hear you there. They made some good games but also got a lot of dumb ideas. Hey, let's take the BEST GAME OF THE YEAR and completely change its looks, physics, and plot. With two games. Don't get me wrong, Wind Waker was kinda nice (the graphics kinda sucked but the special effects and music were actually really cool), but it was so frustrating! And Mario Sunshine just sucked, then add the fact that controlling Mario was like trying to make a sharp turn in a loaded semi on an icy road. You have to rotate the joystick just right to spin-jump, what genius thought of that?

This system had great potential, but because of a gross lack of third-party support (Nintendo themselves can only do so much) there are few games worth playing.

...Oh wait, you weren't kidding. Nintendo may not be able to do a lot on their own, but what they can do kicks every ass combined, when they're not experimenting with crazy changes to things that didn't need changing. There's also plenty of third-party support. (And why shouldn't there be, with such a good anti-piracy system? No piracy == no money lost. Not that it'd be that significant, but they're always pinching the pennies. ) The only problem is the huge lack of mature games. I'm not saying games with a < M rating suck. Indeed, I LOVE Mario Kart DD. But as a 17-year-old guy I need to be able to just shoot someone's head off and watch it splatter virtually every now and then.

In addition, most games poorly use the controller. The controller is at fault here, however, as the layout is designed so it works great with some games. I'd prefer a good controller that works with all games over a great controller that only works for some. =/

There are a total of three problems with the controller.
1) Bad placement of D-pad.
2) Bad placement of Z button.
3) Joysticks get messed up quick.
I imagine there's probably a third-party controller that fixes all those, if you're willing to trade durability.

PS2: Can't say much, though I applaud Sony on putting backward compatibility in.

Hear, hear. This was a hell of an idea. But it sucks that there's a bunch of bugs that make certain games unplayable.

the controller layout on the PS2 is the best of the bunch.

Agreed. But their labelling sucks. X, circle, triangle, square, L2, R2? Come on. Use letters like the rest of the world. You give someone a controller with 4 buttons on the front and tell them to press X, Y, A, B, they knows where all of those are. Where the hell is circle and square? Additionally the L/L2 and R/R2 buttons are too close together.

And people, will you shut the fuck up about the graphics? I've heard enough complaints about the damn graphics, and the next complaint I hear about it might result in my throwing an Xbox at you.

People care more that the game looks good than that it's fun, I'm afraid. (Not me of course, but I do enjoy being able to read the font and see WTF is going on, which a few PS2 games do have problems with.)

And we all know that's a brick.

Don't exaggerate. Bricks are way smaller.

Graphics aren't everything. If they were, would some people still be playing NES games on their computers?

Bubble Bobble has 8-bit, 4-colour graphics and repetitive two-tone square-wave sound. Bubble Bobble pwns everything, especially music-wise.

Xbox: So you call it a brick.

Uh, no, YOU call it a brick. I just call it a big heavy thing.

Frankly, I don't care how damn big the console is.

A valid point, but try to fit a big console into a small space, or take it with you.

Controller too big? They make smaller ones.

And yet...

My only complaint about this console is the black and white buttons. Their placement is a little awkward - it's very possible to have six easily-reachable buttons on one side of the controller, the N64 proved that. Beyond that, no complaints.

You complain about the controller, after saying that you shouldn't complain about the controller because you can get better ones. Though I agree, that design sucks, and how about labelling the damn things?

So what it comes down to...

GCN:
+5 points for quality and selection of games.
+5 points for durability.
-3 points for lack of mature games.
-2 points for lack of DVD/CD-playing ability. Sure it's nice that they're cheap as a result, but for those who are willing to spend a little more it'd be nice to have the option. (One type of system that plays them and one that doesn't.)
+3 points for design. Compact, lightweight, easy to carry.
+1 point for having such huge memory cards available. (Only one, because a lot of games aren't compatible. )
+1 point for the good job of preventing piracy. (Only one again, because it may keep prices down but it also keeps me from playing decent homebrews/emulators. )
-2 points for crappy joysticks.
+1 point for being the cheapest.
Total: 9 points

PS2:
+3 points for quality and selection of games.
+2 points for durability.
-1 point for inability to play burned DVDs.
+1 point for design. Good, but needs work. (Power switch at the back, wtf?)
-1 point for only having 2 controller ports. Get with the times!
+1 point for upgradeable drivers.
+3 points for backward-compatibility.
-1 point for bugs in said compatibility. (Only one, since as a programmer I understand how freaking hard debugging can be sometimes, plus they're pretty minor in most cases.)
Total: 7 points

Xbox: (keep in mind I don't actually own one.)
+1 point for quality and selection of games.
+2 points for durability.
-2 points for inability to play DVDs without a remote.
+2 points for built-in hard drive, specifically the ability to play music (sometimes even in-game) from it.
+1 point for built-in network support. (Only one because you're forced to use their service, so there can't be any free games.)
-1 point for being Microsoft. Just kidding.
+1 point for design. It may be bulky but it looks good. Still could stand to lose some weight though. And the A/V cables suck, you can't split the plugs apart to do stuff like plug the video into a TV and the sound into a stereo.
-1 point for crappy anti-piracy system. It gets the inverse of what Gamecube got for having a good one, for the opposite reasons. (As in, I can play my own stuff but the prices go up.)
+1 point for the anti-cord-breaking mechanism in the controllers. (Only one because the controllers themselves suck. Yes you can get others, but they're not designed by M$.)
Total: 5 points

Feel free to correct me on any of this. I'm not exactly educated on Xbox or PS2. (Yes, I know about the Q, but that's really not a DVD-playing Gamecube so much as a DVD player and a Gamecube with their cicrcuits both put in one box and wired to the same inputs and outputs. Plus, it's only in Japan, like everything good in video games. )

[edit] Added Xbox's total wrong, twice. See, I do play fair, I'm giving it the extra point I forgot instead of leaving you all to not notice. Then I realized I accidentally included the '-1 for microsoft' joke in the real total.

The rubber on my gamecube controllers wore off awhile ago, so I took out some scissors and a knife and widdled the sharp bits away. Now they work just as well as they did before.

And HH, I didn't notice any control problems in Mario Sunshine - my complaints with it lie in the total lack of anything difficult, and the fact it's just not fun to play over.

Maybe it has trouble with Wavebirds? I was using one, and the batteries were weak (died after about 6 hours), but in that time I played SSBM a lot and it was fine. And it wasn't much better with a normal controller.

As far as the rubber, that's annoying, but what I meant was they actually stop working properly.

I've heard that argument that gamecube doesn't have mature games as a problem. It's nowhere near the problems the N64 had. I was almost embarassed to go down the N64 aisle in the video stores (not that I have one, I was just browsing.) At least Gamecube has lately tended to get lots of titles that are on other systems. I can see them improving in their next system release.

Back to my point, I've never considered realism or "maturity" (A code word for gore, violence, and sexual themes) a factor in a game's awesomeness. In fact, if you're paying so much attention to that, it's necessarily going to distract from the goal of designing a good game. For all the early controversy over Mortal Kombat on the SNES not having blood, and gore in the VG community at large, I still think MK sucks, and I still think a lot of "mature" games suck nowadays.

I've played all three and I don't see any reason to favor one system that much over the other.

I've had my wavebird for two years and I've only had to replace the batteries four times that I can recall. As for the stick not working anymore... That's something I've never encountered, even with my tendency to chew on cords

Wow, a board who's default theme is heavily related to Mario, having some Nintendo fanboys? NEVER WOULD'VE GUESS WHOAMG.

Also.

Sega > Nintendo. I just buy the Nintendo stuff now since they're second-best and Sega doesn't make consoles anymore.

This is replying entirely to HH's reply to my post.

No, I might have misworded. I meant don't complain about the size of the controller (Xbox controllers). I never said the layout wasn't to be complained about.

Gamecube: I'll admit, Nintendo can make some really good games. There just aren't many games on the system - again, one company alone can only do so much. You also missed a problem with the layout of the controller. Yes, it can work for some games. But most games not made by Nintendo that I've played- this is more a game problem than a Gamecube problem - don't use the controller well and it ends up being simply a pain in the ass. As for our disagreement on the games... maybe I just got unlucky and found too many games I didn't like. Or our tastes are different.

And my comment on "brick"? Yeah, that came from a thread at Xeogaming. And I've heard it before, offline too. You're right, though - bricks are smaller.

(Nintendo fan boys? That's nonsense, start a PSP thread! )

Gamecube - Great first party titles, and many that suck. Games that have kept me interested in this system are Metroid Prime 1, and 2, Super Smash Bros. Melee (why haven't they done another one?), PSO (I guess?), and hopefully the next Zelda game. (Huge disappointments, Wind Waker and Sunshine, ugh)

PS2 - All around the largest assortment of games. A ton of great titles such as the Silent Hill series, Onimusha, Metal Gear Solid, Grand Theft Auto, and then of course the PS2 is easily the home to most of the RPG's out there. Playback with the PSX also, which I'm a huge fan of.

Xbox - Hardrive, Xbox Live, S-Controller, and some other junk. Also an all around good library of games, and many PC ports. (those of you argueing that's a bad thing, I should slap you for not understanding not everyone out there has the ultimate PC to play many of the newer games out there.)

So, overall, I like them all in different ways. I'd vote for all of them if I can, owning all of them I think they're fine systems, and depending on what kind of a gamer you are, you can't go wrong with them. Which do I play the most? That's common sense, the Snes.

Nintendo could have a problem if it continues to have less than its fair share of third party developers. Sega had a hell of time with the Master System and Nintendo's exclusive licensing policies. I heard that Sega had to make almost 50 of its own titles for the Master System. Maybe more... I'm sure a lot of those were arcade ports of its older games though.

The major thing I hate about the GC, is the Connectivety.

Sure, it's dandy for you people out there with GBA's, a Link Cable, GBA version of a linkable game, and GC version of the game, but I don't have all those, so I find it rather annoying when I'm playing a game and I'm wanting to get everything that I can to only find out I'd need to link up to unlock everything. (sorry, dragged out sentence there ;p)
