What about Paper Mario? Yoshies could actually speak English very well.

Yoshi's Safari was never released under the title "Lemmy's Land", no...

I don't know if he talks in it, I haven't played it in a long while. I'll go download and check, then edit this post.

EDIT: I played through a few levels, no talking by Yoshi.

About Yoshies' ability to speak English, Yoshi did so in SMW when you freed him and wrote a letter. Oddly enough, however, in the SMW comic, Yoshies could only say "Yoshi" and Mario had to get a Yoshi-English dictionary. I have not heard of Lemmy's Land but I do have Yoshi Safari (but no Super Scope ).

Yes. That was the comic I was referring to. As I recall the dictionary was rather unhelpful.

I am fairly sure Yoshi never talked in Yoshi's Safari. Though my super scope is broken now, I played through that game many times as a child.

Say... Do either of you by chance have a link to this comic, or do either of you have a copy that you can scan and upload? I wish to see it.

Lemmy's Land isn't a world. It's a website.

Basically, a bunch of people submit weird, crazy stuff about the Mario universe.

okay, so what we've got so far is that yoshi always says yoshi, aside from a few other non-real words, and that it was a letter that mario encountered in SMW when he he first rescued Yoshi. And lemmy's land is pure fanfiction.

oh, but there is just one more thing. in SMW, after mario defeats a koopling and topples the fortress, the rescued yoshi egg bounces while exclaiming, "Thank you!". a dialouge balloon indicates that it is indeed the yoshi embreo responsible for the message. hmm.

Darwin's theories on species point to an obvious difference in Yoshi types... Yoshis that needed to learn to speak, etc, to adapt to their environment did, and thus were able to survive in a world that requires yoshis that could somehow do more than squeak. The yoshis that did not need to speak, the wild yoshis or the ones that had no established civilization to speak of, needed none of the special evolutionary mechanisms that the yoshis Mario most often interacts with have.

For example, the wild yoshis of Yo'ster Isle in SMRPG had no enemies to fight, therefore they did not evolve the ability to make deadly, explosive eggs. The yoshi in Super Smash Brothers Melee, however, did. The Yoshis in Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's Story OBVIOUSLY needed to defend themselves, so evolution kicked into overdrive.

It's the only way to explain OMG SUPER HAPPY MODE in Yoshi's Story.

What about in Sunshine? Yoshi spewed internal fluids. An interesting adaptation... I'd call that a Delfinian Yoshi.

And these fluids had very strange effects on creatures. In fact, different colored yoshis' fluids had different effects on creatures. This seems to reinforce the idea that yoshis in the wild may work together, as hive animals and would therefore have a hideous hive queen spewing out babies. I am convinced of this now.

Ever notice in the insect kingdom how the leader is almost always a queen, and in the mammal kingdom it's the alhpa male?

But where does this put the yoshi's? are they a pack or a hive? Or either? off the top of my head I cannot not think of any lizards that work together in a group, nor amphibians for that matter.

Yeah, reptiles tend to leave each other alone... Maybe they form a herd with no real leader. Besides, you never hear "And today in the news 2 men died after being bitten by a queen snake."

I don't think Yoshis are reptiles. They don't have scales, at all. They seem more amphibious to me...

The reason the don't have scales is because of the lack of details in the SNES sprites and Cartoon-style drawings. Bowser is a reptile... thing and he doesn't show scales until SSBM. In Super Mario Sunshine, Yoshies die at the touch of deep water. Hmm... maybe he's the missing link. For amphibians/reptiles, I mean.
