Yeah, so it's a complete rehash of what I did last year (or was it the year before? I can't remember now). In fact, it's just an update to that exact same set I released then.

It's much more user friendly now, and most of the main objects can be used on the same screen as the goal. What I mean is, things like the generic platform, the trees, and whatnot will fade out properly when you beat the level. Also, new things have been added like the trees with lights (pictured), the improved chimney (also pictured), and the jumbo christmas lights that go with the jumbo presents as a good bonus stage set (not pictured). The palette has also been streamlined and very improved.

EDIT: It isn't quite ready for release, so point out any problems you may have with it now. I'll also release a small hack (about 6 or 7 levels) that makes use of it so you can see how it's meant to be used.

The background kinda blends into an eye-teasing illusion. Maybe if you made it less repetitive or moved the trees apart a bit more.
I like the bricks, snow, and cabin graphics. Reminds me of this cabin building toy I used to play with.

This is some extra stuff to give some ideas...
Maybe later you can make silhouetted trees, a dark fading background, and some twinkling stars and lights. I think that would be awesome.
Or maybe you could consider snowmen, some used as bushes and some breakable by Mario.

really cool. Only complaint is would you really see the trees through that window? unless the house is just a flat wall like in a play.... :p

Looks really cool JJ. Can't think of anything wrong with it. The only thing I would change is the snow. It looks cool like it is, but i would make the waves longer. Instead of each 16x16 frame being a hump, make it a half hump to make for longer humps, and less like a sound wave.

The ground and the snow look a bit like gingerbread. The curvey snow and reddish soil make it seem that way. I am so-so with the longer curves idea.

What Vortex said.

Also. The trees in the background look like cardboard cutouts...

EDIT: And it seems to me like you shouldn't be able to stand on the front of the house like that There's nothing to indicate there's a balcony there.

Looks awesome, except the BG looks really weird, window should be solid blue or something, and Mario shouldn't be up there.

Let me address your concerns as best I can.

The_Raven: The background could be tweeked. I'll experiment with seperating the trees a little and will post my results if I think it looks better.

Vortex: Yeah, I knew someone was going to call me on that window. I always wanted a window in the original set, but was worried that being able to see through the window was going to put a damper on things. This time around I added it. I see now that instead of having it open, I could just slap a shutter on it and see what happens. As always, expect a screenshot if I like the result.

Kario: I actually did try varying lengths of the snow drifts, but the one the looked the best is the one you see now. And as The_Raven says, it is reminscent of gingerbread (sorta, the shade of the ground isn't right for gingerbread), and I think it looks fine as it is.

Blisseh: I could, perhaps, try giving the tress more depth. It wouldn't be impossible. And I seem to remember you saying something about the house along those lines when I posted the original set whenever I did. I'll take what you said in consideration, there's no real gameplay value for allowing the player to walk there, and I could take out that annoying cross bar.

It is nice. You could keep the crossbar. Just make some new tiles for where the crossbar would be and everyone could choose whether or not to put in the crossbar. It could be useful in some cases.

It is very Christmasy (I know it isn't a real word) and would suit a very good snow themed area. Good work.

Oh, and the style of shading you use is one of the more... simpler ways of shading, but you are the only person who can do it real well. Good work with that.

The cross thing is fine provided you were to draw a back to it so as it looks in to the cabin instead of... Going... Through it. So it'd be like a window.

The background now has more contrast, and I think that helps make it look less flat. Instead of the window being transparent, it's darkish blue. It would be too much work to try to make it seem like you can make out actual objects inside the cabin, but I think what I have works fine. I also made a recessed and shuttered window, but I didn't include it in the picture. I gave the door a frame, which makes it look tons better. The present is a replacement for the goal sphere (as if the sparkle didn't give it away).

Nice work with the background. It now looks... out of focus, which is a really nice effect.

Maybe you should add some snow to the rooftops... if possible. That way, it looks as though it did snow there... just a thought...

The trees still look too cylindrical. They should be more conical, with the leaves at the top ending closer to the trunk than those at the bottom. I realize it'll take a lot of tiles to make it work right, but if you can do it I think it'll definitely be worth it.

Ah yes! Much better!
Lighter colour = more contrast = better visability = better background
Nice present idea! "Hey Mario! What's that on the cabin? Go check it out!"

Looks much better. Though it'd be better still if the window was a lighter shade of blue and moved up/right a bit.

I like the idea of having a nighttime palette but other than that i like the tileset could always add a ver of the door with a wreath (SP) and shouldn't there be a bow on the present . Also the tree should it really be black outline if you cant stand on them... dark/light green maybe?

EDIT: Also could be a version of the chimney that acts as a pipe plus the chimney could be able to be stood on and one version you can walk through and one is a solid pipe for a sm64 effect

But the chimney has those two things sticking out of it. Doesn't look like something you can fit through.

as i said!!! *A DIFFERENT VERSION* in which the chimney is a pipe could always not put those 2 pipes coming outa it for the pipe'd version. Though the normal version should still have those nifty pipettes :-P

cpubasic: I will look into it, but adding an overlay to already existing slope is quite the headache. It would look freaking cool if I pulled it off, though.

Blisseh: You're right, it would take a hella lot more tiles to make the trees look a little more natural. It wouldn't be worth it if you ask me.

The_Raven: Telling Mario would be useless, seeing as how you can't even get there anymore. The present is there only because I had nowhere else to stick it for the screenshot.

elixirnova: A night palette is not a bad idea. The feedback for the different palettes in my Happy Set was good, plus using the same palette over and over again can get quite boring.

I also considered the pipe idea, but... the chimney is not solid so it wouldn't work out too well. It acts as a platform you can jump through the bottom of.

EDIT: I also improved the shading quite a bit on the cabin, I'll post a screenshot when I get home from work. It looks a lot less flat now.
