I want to know how calling cards work so that I can call long distance. All I know about them is that when you buy them and depending on which card you buy there's a certain set time limit on them.

Yes, cards have limits on them depending on how much you spend. What you do is take the card, dial the number on the back then it will tell you to put your pin number in. (also on the back of the card)
Then it will tell you how much time/money you have left on the card then it will tell you to dial the number you want to call.

Most cards have a set amount of minutes on them, and others have monitary amounts. Whichever works for you.

And if you use it on a payphone, it gives you some bogus charge for that. I've never been a fan.

...Don't ask me.

Seriously, whenever I pass by a corner store I see a bunch of posters for calling cards. At one subway station I see around 20 posters, and odds are there's 20 more cards for sale inside.

I don't know what brands would be considered "good" and "stable" in the US, but you'd definitely want one with a low rate for the place you're calling, and with no hidden charges.

Ok, so what happens when the time/money runs out? Do I just throw the card away and buy a new one to replace?

Most cards you just throw away. But there are some where you can recharge them by using a credit card.

*cries on Legion's shoulder* Thanks a lot! I really appreciate it!

One more question: the calls aren't added on to the phone bill when you use a calling card is it?

This of it as paying for your phonebill ahead of time. Once you use up your minutes you will have to go buy new ones. But your question would lead me to believe that it has something to do with your phonebill at home. The answer is no. It is totally independent of any service you already have. That is, if you buy the disposable ones from gas stations, supermarkets, and the like.

There is another kind of phone card which I've never used, but I know some people have which allows you to charge minutes to a credit card. Notice this is different from the ones we were talking about earlier. In the earlier example, you will use your credit card to buy more minutes. Here, it's just a card with no set limit on minutes, other than what you can eventually pay for.

A quick note is that calling cards may or may not work on cellphones (You can use them, but you end up getting charged for the minutes by your cell phone company anyway). I found this out when I used one on a friend's cell phone (He had something like 10 minutes left).

Mostly it is because of the 0800 numbers. At least here in Germany on cell phones call-free numbers beginning with 0800 are not free when accessed from cells too. So that is pretty useless to save lots of money when not at home and thinking to use calling cards with cell phones

And always there are instructions not to insert the calling card into the phone. M'eh ... putting a card of thicker paper, sized like a credit card into a cell phone - where usually only a small SIM fits ...

Calling cards are usually used by people who don't want to pay long distance bills or who want to get in touch with friends/family on the road. Basically you buy a card with X amount of money, use the code that's on it with any phone and call people.

Of course, the rates vary - for example, a $10 card could buy me a lot of minutes when calling the United States or Great Britain, but I'll probably not get as much time if I'm calling Lithuania or South Africa.
