There were some clues to a mystery in the teaser thread. If you would like to figure it out, now would be the time. Need a hint? Take a look at Proto K's screenshot and then watch the battle scene with Dark Crono and Marle closely. Very closely.

---

Now comes the part where I make many of you very happy and a few of you very sad. You see, the teaser patch was just a big swerve. Temporal Flux is not a ROM hack at all.

Temporal Flux is an editor.

You've tried my other programs and think they rock? You ain't seen nothing yet.

I could sit here all day and list all the features this program has, but I figure you would rather just get the bleeping thing. The boards get this first. It will be posted to Zophar's front page sometime Friday.

This program requires the .NET Framework v1.1 which is available from Windows Update and elsewhere on Microsoft's website.

http://geigercount.net/crypt/tf107.zip (229k)

And Chickenlump has written up a manual that covers some of the basics.

http://geigercount.net/crypt/tfmanual.zip (616k)

I have to give some special thanks to Chickenlump and JLukas. Without them, Temporal Flux would only be about half as far along as it is now.

Finally, there are some ways you can help the further development of this editor. Layer 3 tiles are not displayed or editable in this version, mostly because I do not know how to render them on top of the other tiles. And a number of Location Event commands are not fully decoded, so if you can figure some of that out, it would be a big help.

What's to come? Overworld Event and (hopefully) Layer 3 editing are scheduled for the next version. The eventual goal is to be able to edit everything (though it will probably be some time before TF is capable of that ).

Bug reports and suggestions are always welcome. If you find that you like this program so much you would like to thank me in some manner, nothing says "thank you" quite like a Donation.

My god.

*dan cries.

I can see this overtaking Lunar Magic as most used ROM hacking level editor. Amazing.

And it actually runs pretty well for a Windows Forms application too.

Wow, that was really unexpected.

When you say you don't know how to draw layer 3 on top of other tiles, do you mean you can't figure out how to draw them transparently so that you can still see the other tiles?
If so, all you need is bitblt and a mask. I'll explain it if that actually is the problem.

Crono's Mom and Melchior get it together, and go off to get married. Unfortunately, Crono's Mom gets kidnapped, and Crono must save her! Contains the classic line "Crono's mom is good in the sack!"

Well, I almost knew it in a way, when I didn't find a lot more than I expected in the teaser patch.

Anyways, I'm going to download and try this out (why not, I love messing with CT). Did any of you have any luck in trying to decode the enemy AI scripts? I've had a little luck replacing attacks with others (in my Schala enemy patch, and a few others), but I want to try and fully decode them so you'd be able to replace anything (much like FF3USME's enemy attack script editor can).

Great work!

Also, is it normal for TF to use a lot of RAM? I just opened an overworld and it's using over 82 MB.

Yosh. I'm announcing this on the Compendium. Hopefully, the fanbase there can take this and run with it and make a hack in the very near future.

Ok!

Unexpected to say the least. Great work!

You DO know that there is already a great Translation Editor for Chrono Trigger, do you? It's called Chrono Tools and isn't hosted at Zophar as far as I know. It can change many things used for translations. You might want to check that one out too, since the source is available by my knowing.

This may be of some use to the editor:

http://www.helmetedrodent.kickassgamers.com/Proto_K/attackbytes.rtf

It's a very incomplete list of enemy attacks that I started on a long time ago. I think someone might have listed them all before somewhere though, but meh.

Heh... after I saw the time link, I found Evil Peer to be incredible by fooling many.

From the TIME link with italics around the key words making the difference:

This is a teaser patch for my upcoming release, Temporal Flux. I strongly recommend viewing this patch in ZSNES. The patch should be applied to the US release of Chrono Trigger.

Non-Headered ROM:
http://evilpeer.net/crypt/tftease.zip

Headered ROM:
http://evilpeer.net/crypt/tftease.headered.zip

If you downloaded the ROM from the internet, yours is probably headered. The full release of Temporal Flux will only work with non-headered ROMs.

Screenshots would sort of ruin the point of the patch, so I chose two of the least effective shots I possibly could.

http://evilpeer.net/crypt/tftease00.png
http://evilpeer.net/crypt/tftease01.png

This is the secret project I have made vague references to. I have been working on it for a year and approximately 1500 man-hours.

Barring unforseen circumstances, I will release Temporal Flux on November 24th, 2004. I will not be commenting or answering questions for this until then.

---End

Nice word usage . Great utility Evil Peer. Can't wait to see what comes from this release. *something besides drunk Chrono text hacks *

EDIT: Why respond to someguy? I'm an editor for the college paper .

Okay, I got off my browser and into ZSNES to take another peek at the teaser, and I am guessing the ones attacking were not the Dark Chrono and Dark Marle, but real ones, and that everything is done with clever naming and event placement and perhaps alittle graphics hacking.

Okay, I've been trying out the editor for a few hours, and I have a few problems:

Saving. A lot of stuff doesn't save at all even after I hit Save, then test in an emulator. I've found that selecting Write to Memory beforehand can help, but not always.

I can't get exits to work right. I tried the "Use tent to get to Lucca's Room" example to test and it worked properly, but Crono doesn't appear and I couldn't control him. Yes, I looked at the Lucca's Workshop room in the editor and copied the exact X/Y/Tile/Position values that the exit to Lucca's Room has, and saved again, and it still didn't work. When I reloaded the editor and checked back on the exit again, I found that the values I put didn't save at all (see above).

As for everything else, great job. Now my "more accurate 2300 AD map" might become reality.

do you mean you can't figure out how to draw them transparently so that you can still see the other tiles?

I know how to do the technical work. I do not know what palette the tiles use, how much they blend, or how exactly they blend (Layer 3 is used for both light sources and shadows among other things).

is it normal for TF to use a lot of RAM?

Yes. For starts, two copies of the ROM are held in memory. And a ton of stuff is decompressed to more memory. And consider that each map you look at is a generated-on-the-fly 3 megapixel image.

Starting to catch my drift?

You DO know that there is already a great Translation Editor for Chrono Trigger, do you? It's called Chrono Tools

I am familiar with its existence; some of its features may be supported in the future. I already know how to infinitely expand strings though. That may be in the next version as well.

Nice word usage

Thanks. As you have pointed out, I was in fact talking about two completely separate things in that post. The italicized items refer to Temporal Flux, everything else refers to the teaser. I never refered to TF as a hack and nothing in that post is actually false.

I am guessing the ones attacking were not the Dark Chrono and Dark Marle, but real ones, and that everything is done with clever naming and event placement

You have pretty well got it there. The teaser is an absolute fraud, and I was really expecting (and hoping) that someone was going to yell FAKE! You see, Crono, Marle, and Ayla are the ones actually in the party. The Magus and the other Crono (the one who appears to be in the party) are actually enemies. There are only two visual tells in the teaser itself, magic points of the party lowering, and the party readying itself for battle. Proto K provided another clue with his screenshot displaying renamed characters.

When I reloaded the editor and checked back on the exit again, I found that the values I put didn't save at all (see above).

You need to always "Write to Memory" to save something done in the map editors. And any changes you make are only valid for the current Location. So if you do a ton of editing on one map, and then switch to another (via the combobox), kiss your changes goodbye.

As for your problems with exits, I have confirmed that the bug exists. This was apparently introduced at the last minute when I changed the destination location from a numeric spin to a combobox.

I will get to resolving the issue rightaway.

Wow. I never expected that sort of turn after reading your teaser thread Very nice thing you've done here Even with those bugs that Proto K pointed out, this is still a really cool utility I can't wait to see what later versions bring

Now the only thing that makes me wonder is the slew of Chrono Trigger hacks that'll be coming out in the next couple months, whether they're complete or not I thought it'd take alot of time to beat all the SMW hacks I've collected, these would take even longer

Congrats on the release EP!
I hope everyone enjoys the release, getting to this point was alot of fun.

The Save Map to PNG option is one of my favorite options, I fell in love with it, and one of the maps has been my sig image for about 5 months now.

I can't wait to see all the modifications to come, map edits, event edits...
Fun times ahead...

Heh, I was wondering how the 'enemies' managed to pull off the Ice Sword dual-tech, and now I know.

The fact that 'Magus' absorbed the attack too seemed a bit weird, but I didn't notice it.
