What do you guys think are the worst sounding English words?
I ask this because of a discussion in my math class today. I don't mean vulgar words or words with bad meaning, just words that SOUND bad. Don't come off the tongue well or something. Two that stick in my mind are "pigment" and "ointment". My teacher said the latter was the worst sounding he's heard of.
And he even told a story of a foreigner he meant who thought one of the most beautiful English words, since she didn't know the meaning, was "diarrhea".

I have no real good way of concluding this, so there.

Supposedly, "cellar door" is one of the most pleasant-sounding English phrases. As for bad sounding English words/phrases, I can't think of any off-hand, but I can recall thinking at times, "That sounds horrible". My girlfriend hates certain words, like "quivering".

Probably thought it of a theme of interpretive dance.

Diarrhea flooooows like a river.

Points to who knows where that's from.

Usage. It just sounds so weird... Like a horrible grammatical error, that there should be a different word.

First word I thought of when I entered this thread was "sleeplessness." I'm gonna go with that.

"Airplane," as well. Ugh. Actually thinking about this is giving me a headache so eh... I'm gonna go lie down.

"Store" bothers me, too.

Are we talking words that sound vulgar but aren't? In that case, "exacerbate" and "masticate," which mean to make worse and to chew

If we're talking words that are just unwieldy and suck to say, then stuff like "celsius" and "certificate" and "difference" are ones I don't like.

I really hate erudite types of words, like erudite, and cogent. Sounds like some asshole trying to speak Latin english. Masticate comes to mind. I also hate words that have fucked up spellings. Like byouant. I probably fucked that up, anyways.

And need I say, spegma sounds as disgusting as it is.

I vote we use "goozack" for instead of that unspeakable word.

I don't like "flaccid," because it is actually meant to be pronounced with the first C hard, like "flaksid." Nasty sounding word. Which is probably why it got popularly transformed into "flassid," which still sounds pretty bad.

I cant say tragedy. No matter how hard I try, it comes out as tradegy. So, I hate that word.
Also, the word scrumptious. That word does not sound good.

"Bad themes to use for an interpretive dance." Enter Ryan Stiles (sp?)

I believe Robin Williams was guesting in that episode. Was pretty good.

Nice hint with the "points" reference too.

Back on topic, any word that is 6 syllables or more is bad, nuff said.

Trapster, most people I know would say "sammitches" rather than "sammidges", as in, "Woman, go make me a sammitch"

Sammidge sounds like something Popeye might say.

Hey, I had an obscure reference too. It was in my earlier post in this thread. Someone should guess it. That would kick ass. Twenty bajillion points.

I forget the name of the books. Something along the lines of Wayward School, or something like that. With no floor 13 (except there is) and the recess guy with the mustache and stuff.
