I've heard some people refer to them as "C-[direction]", but others have referred to them as "[direction]-C"... What do you call them?

C-up flows, whereas up-C sounds awful. Plus, it makes more sense to first establish that it's C before stating the direction since there's only one C area, as opposed to two areas with left/right/up/down directions. That's probably just being really nit-picky, though, so I'll simply stand by my earlier argument of it simply sounding better.

There are three, if you count the D-pad.

Whenever I speak on the net, I say c-up c-down and such.

If you could be even more picky, you could say Camera up camera down and such. Since C stands for camera and the yellow buttons was orginally made for camera movement.

The problem with replacing the "C" with "Camera" is that sometimes "C-Up"/"Up-C" would move the camera down, which can be a bit confusing. Oh well...at least that's not as confusing as what I've heard about some people doing...I heard about one guy who called the top C button "Ham Sandwich", the left C button "C-Down" (or was it "Down-C"? I can't remember exactly), the bottom C button "Bob", and the right C button "Ham Sandwich".
(edit: ...or did he call the left C button "Ham Sandwich" and the right one "C-Down" or "Down-C"? )

I use the C-button to crouch in Goldeneye. Honestly, I think that the c-buttons are hard to use in games.

L+R+Z, Up+C-Down, C-Up+Down, Left+C-Left, C-Right+Right, A+B+Start.

It makes more sense not only because it sounds better, but it's less confusing. If you tell someone to press "Up-C" they're likely to mash Up before you say the C. If you say C first, they know.

yellow works...unless you have someone color blind...then you got some trouble there...but
but yellow does make it easier..and its likely if you said left-C they would ask left and what c button...

I never really use it, unless forced to like in Metroid Prime or something. But they're used more like menu surfing in Prime, instead of actually controlling you.

Actually, I was counting the D-pad. But yeah, I suppose you could count the analog stick, too. I was mostly referring to how the D-pad and C buttons both have 4 directions, whereas the analog stick has 360 degrees of possible directions.

C-up, C-down, etc.

The button comes first, then the direction. Since there are 4 C buttons, they have to each be categorized differently. You'll confuse someone if you tell them "up-C" and they hit up on the control pad.

C-Up. Sounds better, and as people have said, you're less likely to mash the pad or stick.

C-Up indeed too

Nintendo made a good deal by inventing the N64 controller. There is no equivalent for emulation, so I'm using my Logitech Dual Action (exactely the samt layout like a PS1/PS2 analogue controller), since you never have the ideal setup for the four C buttons

My setup used in games, referred th the PS-joypad layout:

X = A
Square = B
Circle = C-right
Triangle = C-up
Select = C-left (try to play the Ocarina in Zelda OoT like that)
Start = Start (not really )
L1 = L
R1 = R
L2 = Z
R2 = C-down

Nah, I think, I'll put the left C-button to another position for Zelda OoT - since in battle you need to switch quickly
