OOC: Only Silvershield may post in this.

A wall of hewn stone stood blocking off a side path of a mountain pass. The walls, ground, and surrounding mountains were white from falling snow. Ten dwarves walked along the top of the wall, looking up as often as they looked out, as if the heavens themselves might attack.

A closed gatehouse sat in the center of the wall, the few marks on the porticllis showing that it was rarely used.

Several figures approached, picking their way up the powder-covered mountain trail. There were eight in all, each in somewhat different attire, though all were armed for battle. The warrior moving at the head of the pack prominently displayed a shield with a simple set of arms emblazoned upon it: a yellow field with a single black bar painted horizontally across the top.

Of the eight, five wore plate armor: the leader, as well as the four males following immediately behind him in double-file. Behind them marched, in single file, three figures of indeterminate gender - their heavy, fur-lined cloaks obscured their features entirely. However, it could be seen that none wore heavy armor; the travelers' cloaks clung snugly to shivering bodies.

As the group moved closer, the same emblem could be seen on each member: the stylized silhouette of a unicorn's head, outlined in gold and filled with white. Some wore it on their cloaks, some on chains around the neck, and one warrior had the logo painted in the corner of his shield. Indeed, of the five lead men, three carried shields.

A wall of solid dwarf-hewn stone standing firmly in the travelers' path led them to halt - maintaining formation - and await a response from the lord of the fortress.

A dwarf on the wall looked down on the group, and called out, his breath fogging in the cold mountain air, "You group want something?"

Without hesitation, the leader stepped forward and removed his helmet. He called out, through blue lips, "Aye, small one. We request passage. My company has traveled far, and it is not our wish to be impeded by this dwarf-wall."

The dwarf motioned east and west, to the pass that ran through the mountains. "This wall doesn't stop travelers. The three wyrms around these parts, however, might." He returned to scanning the sky at random.

The dwarf-wall did, however, block off an alcove in the south side of the pass. The sun just sank behind the mountains, covering the pass in shadow.

Out of character - I'm sorry, I think I'm misunderstanding the setup here. Could I get a brief explanation of the scene and, specifically, of what the wall is blocking?

OOC: The mountain pass runs east and west. The wall is on the south side of the pass, blocking off an alcove in the pass. Think of a "T". The pass is the top line, and the wall blocks you from going down the up-down line. The sun is setting, and if you continue on for the night, you might run into the three dragons who live in these mountains. Each dragon is over a thousand years old. I'll PM any more information you need, if you need it.

[Out of character - Thanks for clearing that up .]

The leader bundled himself in the stiff woolen cape that was draped over his shoulders, reacting to the abrupt loss of the sun's warmth. "'Tis our task to map these mountains, and your wall blocks a possible route." He paused to pull his heavy gloves more tightly onto his hands, and to remove his coif to replace it with a snug woolen cap. "The world grows colder as the sun sets. Tell us, what lies beyond this wall that such a guard is needed?"

The dwarf laughed. "The best damn tavern for a couple hundred miles, for one." He motioned behind him, and the porticullis raised.

"Spend the night here. You can talk to the thane about the mountains if you want." He then resumed walking the wall.

The leader saluted his dwarven contact casually, and led the seven through the wall.

Within the confines of the stone fortress, the group spotted the aforementioned pub with little difficulty. They entered quickly, pulling off their gloves and throwing back their hoods as they enjoyed the rush of warm, aromatic tavern air. One could now see that, of the eight, seven were male. The leading five, as mentioned, were decked out in plate armor, while the first two in line behind them (the foremost of which was female) wore what amounted to little more than elaborate clothing. Guarding the company's rear was a man clad in studded leather armor, a sword hanging from each hip and a longbow flung over his shoulder.

Selecting a table near one wall, the band disarmed themselves. Shields and larger weapons were propped against the wall, while any smaller weapons carried by the group - amounting, in total, to a warhammer, a shortsword, and a pair of longswords, plus assorted smaller sidearms - found resting places in unused corners of the table.

The group noticed a couple things about the tavern, the first being that it was large. Large enough to hold around 240 people.

The walls were brick, well made for something built into the side of a mountain. However, the slightly unsettling thing is that the tavern was empty. The eight newcomers were the only people in the room.

A cook walked out of the attached kitchen to the group, the sounds and smells of cooking flowing from the room as the door was open, bowed to them, and told them, "I'm sorry, good travelers, but the tavern is closed for the time being. If you'll follow me, I'll talk you to the mess hall."

"Aye," responded the leader. "Apologies for our mistake." The eight travelers promptly gathered their belongings and, automatically assuming a rough marching order, followed the cook.

"Not a problem. Not many travelers come here at this time."

The cook led the group into the kitchen. A small army of thirty five dwarven cooks worked quickly, with clasic dwarven zeal, making what looked like enough food for an army, although it was getting carried out of the kitchen too quick to take a better guess at the total amount of food.

As the group was led through a door on the other side of the kitchen, they walked into a huge dining hall, with rough wooden benches and long, rectangular tables filling the room. Animal furs and various dwarven weaponery lined the walls, while the floor was rough stone.

They also saw where all the food was going, seeing as the room was full. Just under eight hundred dwarves sat in the room, all eating and talking among themselves. A wave of silence quickly spread through the room, as the dwarves quit eating and all turn to stare at the newcomers.

OOC: Just toss up your reaction. XD

The leader wished he'd still worn his helmet, for he couldn't hide an uncomfortable expression on his face. Even with his face covered, though, the man's body language would have betrayed his anxiousness. Behind him, the seven others scanned the room silently. One, a cocky youth, leaned on the polearm he carried and nonchalantly spit-shined a bit of armor that he'd pulled from his pack.

The sound of a hand slamming onto a table got the starring dwarves to quit starring. They turned to a grey-skinned dwarf sitting at the head table in the room, who returned a sharp glance to the dwarves in the room. They returned to their eating and talking, although they still made the odd glance to the newcomers.

The grey dwarf was sitting at a large round table at the end of the room, raised a couple steps off the ground. To his left sat a scarred, old dwarf, his eyes those of someone who had been through hell and survived. To the grey dwarf's right sat a lady who could easily pass for a lovely elf, if she had pointed ears. Everyone in the room wore simple clothing, coats hung over the backs of chairs.

The grey dwarf motioned to the newcomers to come sit at his table. There were enough chairs around the table to hold another dozen people.

The leader promptly led his seven followers to the head table and, following proper etiquette, halted and offered a formal salute. Each of the seven bowed or saluted in turn before ascending the dais, and then took a seat quietly.

The leading man offered greetings to the grey dwarf, nodded to the scarred one to the left and the lovely woman to the right, and said, "You have our greatest thanks, dear dwarf, for accepting this party into your great hall to temporarily avoid the mountain's climate and...aerial dangers."

He simply waved it off, saying, "No warrior deserves to die ambushed at night." He called for food and drink as the sound level raised back to that of before.

He then asked the leader of the group, "I do have one question for you. Why were you traveling through unexplored mountains, approaching nightfall, when these mountains are a hive of dragonkind?"

OOC: I'll be a bit slow in replying. Have something that's stealing my free time.

"My companions and I are mapping the region for our own purposes," explained the leader. "The prospect of being set upon by a dragon does not frighten myself or those I lead. We are all seasoned adventurers: our steel is strong, our spells mighty." The head warrior motioned to those around him. "It was my own strike that felled the old green, Torzondondillinar, in a distant land," he continued, patting the warhammer at his hip, "and my companions have fought their share of wyrms, as well."

"I have fought these three dragons, and barely excaped with my life. They may fight each other in the air above this fort on a regular basis, but should one fall under attack, the other two come to its aid."

The dwarf took a swig of his drink before motioning to a nearby cook, who promptly ran off. "We can discuss the wyrms later. Food, drink, and introductions should come first."

"Aye, introductions," repeated the leader, though he merely spoke the words robotically. His mind was on the prospect of battling three dragons at a time. Seperate, he and his company might handle the beasts, but when combined the wyrms would surely destroy the band.

"I am Igas Demetrius, High Commander of the Order of the Motley Unicorn. We are something of a mercenary band. We number greater than fourty swords, eight of which you see before you." Extending his hand, Igas remarked, "Are the identities of my companions of interest to you, as well, fine host?"
