Ok. I was having a discussion with my friend about..the recycle bin. Yes, we were talking about the recycle bin on our computers. When you empty it, where does the stuff go? It has to go somewhere doesn't it? We started making theories, like maybe it all goes to one huge computer junkyard made by the government. If we are totally wrong and you have hard facts on this topic, please share it with me, because I can't stop thinking about it...I don't want to delete my stuff ever again.

It doesn't go anywhere technically....

The hard drive is just told to make it think that it's "not there" so it can be overwritten with other data.

That's pretty much it.

I'm sure you remember "Undelete" in Windows 3.1. And how it didn't work most of the time.

Majin: Make sure you overwrite those files explicitly with a special program. Otherwise when they come to your house they'll find those naughty pictures.

There was a command in Windows 3.1 with the name undelete. Microsoft still have no offical utititly for doing that. Not even with the commando prompt.

I have deleted some files by mistake once, but well... it wasnt that important.

No it dosen't get compressed, just moved to a folder. Not even in NTFS. And it's the other way too, it dosen't uncompress compressed files. (compressed files are shown with the colour blue in Win XP >.>)

And Macintosh had the recycle bin since the 80's, I remember Microsoft telling people how innoative the Recycle bin was in Windows 95.... when Macintosh had it first.

Macs up and until OS X had a trash can. Now with OS X it's still named Trash, but the icon depicts a waste basket instead of a trash can. Odd.

I've got the REAL answer to the question.

The Trash Can is a mystical thing build by ancient people in order to feed their god, by giving it every useless programs and documents and by giving him some porn.

Your basically telling the Macintosh to unmount it. Which it answers with ejecting the thing.

You probably unmounted the HD by doing that.

Techincally the Macintosh shouldn't even consider unmount an disc that is in use... but I really don't know about the older ones.

And well, when a disc is unmounted it's just not ready for usage. The mac will act as it would just been removed... and it respons with an crash.

A waste basket is what you have in your houses, and a trash can is the big can outside. Nobody says waste basket though. Well, I don't. .
