Confirmed by the BBC, CNN, CTV and basically any other source you'd care to look at. No official announcement from the military hospital in Paris yet.

I think everyone knew it was coming but there'll be some shock/mourning in Palestine today. Hopefully no instability arises from this, and maybe it'll kickstart the peace talks again... that is, if Arafat was the only obstacle.

I just read this. I feel that he lived a long, long, pathetic life, though it's too bad the "Picnic Man" died.

Yasser Arafat is one of my heroes. Although lately he degraded into nothing more than a figure head, I dispise the notion he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for nothing other than to appease the Palestinian Liberation Organization. Israel's pig-headed ideals are what kept the peace talks from coming, the death of Rabeen and the rise of Sharon are what have caused problems. That bastard Sharon is only now starting to think of the consequences of Zionist oppression of the Palestinians. I feel very strongly about Arafat and see him on par with many of the liberators of men, he stands there with George Washington in my eyes (yes, I respect the American revolution). Arafat fought to right the injustice of the creation of Israel. The UN and the comittees involved thought too poorly of the Muslims and the culture of the Muslims when assigning the land. They tore too heavily in that area and of course mistrust arose. Not to say that Israel shouldn't exist, but it should've been better planned. The Zionist movement had already been on the forefront of purchasing vast stretches of land around the world to begin Jewish settlements, it is a pity that no one thought of speaking to the Muslim world to resolve the deep bred hatred that the sons of Abraham seem to feel towards each other.

I can only hope that God welcomes Arafat with wide open arms and St. Peter will forgive the sins of this man.

And Bush's statement causes hatred to boil in my heart ""There will be an opening for peace when leadership of the Palestinian people steps forward and says help us build a democratic and free society," he said."

Democracy isn't the only form of freedom for man. It is only the idea that perpetuates American interests. Let the people choose their government, for a true man of democracy would see that the power of the people is to choose how their freedom is assigned.

Eh, I'd rather it be democracy or something similar than an autocracy. That doesn't mean I would force it upon em'. At this rate they won't get a state anyways.

Wouldn't it be weird if we wake up tomorrow (thursday) and they say that he's alive?

Bush looks on the bright side of everything. Sometimes this is a bad thing.

Arafat wasn't exactly as pathetic earlier in his life... it was just when he got old that he either went sort of insane or just... trying to stir up attention.

I agree, Bush handled the entire situation horribly.

pretty much knew it was coming....in a irreversible coma..not much you can do there...although it would be weird if he was still alive and his coffin was empty, and he was actually really healthy and just wanted to get out of his house, so he faked his death...

I totally agree with you, Ziff.

However, I think the Palestinian people should be stronger about their own abilities; they don't necessarily need a leader. They depended on him but not knowing why. He appeared to bring hope to the Palestinians. But they should know that they can work on their own. I found Bush's statement vile; it makes it seem that he wished for Arafat's demise.

His death is a mixed blessing at best. Israel and the world at large loses someone to blame for the lack of progress, Palestinians lose the only old-style secular-nationalist leader with the strength and credibility to maintain a mandate to speak for all Palestinians... how can people not see that the situation is now RIPE for religious fundamentalists like Hamas to supplant the secularist, moderate* Palestinian "leadership" and make things a LOT nastier for everyone!?

*(Yes, you heard me, moderate. Who do you think Israel would rather deal with; the PLO/PA which has acknowledged its right to exist and has achieved progress before... or Hamas which still wants to butcher every Jewish Zionist infidel from the Jordan River to the Mediterrenean?)

I wonder if people will still be happy when they realise Arafat wasn't really the problem, just a really easy scapegoat who had nowhere near the level of control people think he did:

"O SHIT THEY'RE STILL ANGRY AND CHUCKING ROCKS AND YELLING A LOT AND BOMBING US!? BUT ARAFAT'S DEAD!!!"

"HOW CAN THIS BE? ARAFAT WAS PERSONALLY BEHIND EVERY BOMBING"

"HE MUST BE DIRECTING THEM FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE!!!"

---dunn dunnn dunnnnnnnnn---

*Israeli Tanks roll into Ramallah*

*Israel deploys its Ghostbusters to attack Arafat's grave*

---theme music plays---

Can people even differentiate between, say, Hamas, Hezbollah, the PFLP, Fatah, and the PLO? Do they seriously not see the dangers in Arafat's passing?

yup...i agree. arafat i believe was the hope currently of bringing peace. Since he is now gone, the entire state of palistine really does not have a leader, which in terns ensues more chaos and the bloody cycle begins all over again.

Mohammad Abbas and the other leaders of the new Palestinian state lack the strength of Arafat. Hammas, Hezbollah and tonnes of other fundamentalist agencies are going to rise up and begin a new cycle of brutality in Israel. This is all because Abbas and the others have even less control over them than Arafat did. And he had next to none.
