A man becomes a man and a woman becomes a woman when they are mature enough to live out on their own

Yep. It's hard to draw a line on maturity...That's for sure...Because if you aren't talking about being sexually mature, then...Well, then it's all opinion. Once a person takes responsibility for their actions and can take care of themselves...Then I guess I'd call them mature. |

There's three meanings to "adult" - Legally - Physically - Mentally Legally, you become an adult at age 18, in most countries. You have civil rights and duties that you didn't have as a (legal) child, you have to vote, your parents are not responsible for your actions, etc... Physically, it's all about growth. I for one am an adult legally, but physically, I don't look like one at all, I still look like a kid (or a teen, if you prefer). Some people look like fully grown adults at age 16, in the US they're the ones who buy beer for their friends because they never get asked for IDs... Mentally, maturity counts the most. Someone who watches cartoons, does drugs and laughs at stupid jokes can still be considered an adult mentally though. It's not so much about their behavior, it's more about their ability to handle things in life. It's more than having a job, having a wife/husband, being settled, it's being aware of the things that arise once you become an adult, whether it is legally or in your every day life. My aunt for example I would say was never really an adult, she was unable to handle life from the very start. She had a lot of very short term relationships, and one day she had a slightly longer one and managed to get married, she had kids, she was settled, and seemed to be doing very well as a housewife. WRONG. She got a divorce and from there on she was unable to find a job, as a matter of fact she didn't even look for a job, she looked for a boyfriend, but it's not as easy when you're 40 or so. From there on she became very depressive, and had to get money from her parents. After spending several months in a hospital due to depression, she eventually found a small job while getting some money from her ex husband, and now that her two daughters are living on their own, she lives at my grandmother's house. I only met her a few times in my life, and all I could notice is that she kept talking like a teenager, and only really identified with her nephews and nieces, never talked much with other adults unless someone asked her a question.. Most people outside the family view her as a lunatic, but we know what's really going on, she's just a child who never grew up, she's almost 60 now and still handles life like a teenager would. I think to be an adult you need to fill the three categories: legally, physically and mentally. I've got one and a half so far, and it sure isn't physically |

Originally posted by Sofie Same here. It all depends on the person. And you just know, you know. Heck, I'm 24 and I still don't see myself as an adult, even though I've been on my own since I was 19 and working since I was 16. I'm just me, and I don't feel that age or anything of the sort has anything to do with...well, anything. And now that I've totally lost everyone.... |

Again, this should be in Officer's Club. General forum is for general discutions where the topic does not fall into the category of any other forum. Obviously when you're talking about a serious discution like this and you say right in the title, "No Crap" It should be an obvious indicator that it should be in OC.

*chuckle* OK, to be SERIOUS, as you asked, there are different ways of being a man or a woman. It's opinion, my friend! Maturity is basically what you're asking for, right? Sexually mature? After puberty. Mentally mature? After college. Emotionally mature? When you can take responsibility for your own actions... I can see a little boy being a better man than many 'adults'. It just depends on the boy, obviously. African Americans males were called 'Boy!' back in the Civil Rights era, etc... A Jew is a man when he reaches 16... American folks reach legal maturity ovr teh course of the ages 16-21, as they gain all their 'grown-up' rights. Doesn't mean they can use them responsibly... Hm. Yep, all I have to do here is point down to Anya's post ( Damn! Every time... ) and tell you that I think she's right. She doesn't give her enough enough credit for being mature, but she sounds like it to me. (edited by Destiny Smasher on 03-25-04 08:15 AM) |

I'll have to agree to the previous statement that "adulthood" is little more than a word. Maturity, like most anything else, is subjective. Of course, it's hard to ignore the evidence placed in front of my all throughout my life so far. Obviously, mental and physical changes occur as you age, as well as changes in the way you see yourself and the way others see you. For me, it's not simply: weiner kid || MANLY MAN! You don't just reach a certain point and transform instantly! But yes, there are events that shape you. The rate at which I "grew up" (and there's bound to be much more to do) started to increase around the advent of self awareness. But I suppose I really can't use this as a universal constant, because there are many, many folks around who are supposedly adults who don't fit my concepts. |

I think you're fully mature when you are able to make descisions that benefit not only yourself, but also help the people around you. A mature person doesn't get angry at someone over dumb reasons, and doesn't hold grudges. Grudges are a pointless waste of time that just get in the way of friendships, but not everyone knows this. I just learned this recently.. and it's true. A mature person also knows how to survive without the help of mommy and daddy constantly looking over their sholder. If they're a kid they study on their own, and take their lives into their own hands. If they're an adult they get a job and support themselves and possibly even a family. A mature person is also open to new ideas and learning things they may not have known before. A mature person also knows how to have fun without being an asshole and doing immature things such as breaking other peoples possessions and such. Now that I've defined my definition of maturity.. I don't think that being only mature is what makes you an adult. You can be mature and be 13 years old, but I do not consider you an adult. I consider myself to be pretty mature, although I have somethings to learn about life.. I'm not an adult though. You are an adult when you have the age and maturity to be considered an adult. I consider people over 20 to be adults, 18 and 19.. you're still in highschool/beginning college stage of your life.. you're still a kid.. and this is the last of your teenage years. Enjoy them. However, if you're over 20 and aren't mature.. you're still a child. |
