Senior year is 1/4th of the way over and its time to buckle down and start doing all that college stuff. I filled out 2 applications today online but I only sent 1 because the other needed me to write a 500 word essay, ill write it another day and send it before Monday. Then I have to go find scholarships and do my community service before I graduate and get another job cause I need money......

Just make sure that college is for you. Some people waste money on it, only to find out that its not cut out for them. But to each is own and good luck to you. The real world isn't that bad, but then again, there are a few bad eggs in the bunch.

You know, I have some applications here that desperately need to be filled out... I should get to that sometime. Does anyone have advice for writing college essays? I've heard plenty from experts, but I wouldn't mind hearing some from people who've done it in the past few years as opposed to the past few decades.

Uhm...you wrote one?

Course then I'm not in a really top notch [community] college myself either. If you're talking about English 110 essays...500-1000 words max most times...

In other words, don't write a friggin' autobiography unless you're going to Yale...and even then, if you've applied and found yourself that far into acceptance...I doubt they want to hear a lot. Short, sweet, and lacking grammar and spelling errors. If you know how to write then you don't have much to worry about if they give you a prompt. Just write BS. :\

*whew* That's good to know Hiryuu. I can can write decently, but I couldn't come up with an exceptionally good topic.

I'm applying Early Action to this place. I already qualify for a scholarship if I get accepted, my guidance counselor knows the faculty there, and she said she would write me a really killer letter of recommendation.

Oh yeah, things are looking good.

At first, getting all of the college stuff ready seemed really overwhelming, but looking back on it, it's really not that bad.

Don't be nervous about taking the ACT, you can always retake it, and if you do better, you can just use the new score.

When writing essays, first your grammar, punctuation, and spelling should all be perfect. Give it to a few teachers and have them look over it for you just to be sure.

As for the content...it really depends on what question they're asking. No one wants to read the generic "Oh I'm looking forward to college and I'm going to try my best, and I'm a good person, blah blah blah." Would you want to have to read thousands of those? Not likely... Try making it interesting and something that will grab their attention. Depending what kind of college you want to go to, and what you want to major in can also influence what you write.

This is the first few senences of a college essay I wrote:

Waking up to panic-stricken screams, I leapt out of bed. Dashing outside, I faced the ravenous murderer: my pure bred Golden Retriever, Angel. At her paws, a ball of cushiony fur quivered. Picking it up, I soon realized I was holding a baby rabbit.

Did that get your attention? If you're wondering how that turned into an essay to get me into college, I worked off of that story to show my "values" when I saved the rabbit.

Wow...thats good. Im not too worried about the essay, and my ACT score is a 22 and I have honors classes and Ive maintained a 3.8 GPA throughout high school. There really shouldnt be any reason to worry...its just that I dont know where to start.
