| Apparently, it's the companies' responsibility to look through all the patents ever filed and make sure none of the old, obscure, stupid ones apply to whatever they're doing. The patent office has needed HUGE reforms for a long time now, primarily a new set of submission criteria. Maybe something like this will finally kick-start the process, especially if big, bad Hollywood gets involved (now that they have such strong ties to the video game industry). |

| The guy's name is McKool? No way he can lose this case! But seriously, this is a huge problem with the patent system... the fact that a person can patent an idea that would have been discovered a million times over by other people independantly isn't really a great thing to have. He does have the patent, and he does deserve to win, but his "royalties" should be an extremely negligible amount due to the.. non-uniqueness of his patent. It's like that guy who trademarked hyperlinks and filed suit a few years back. These cases tend to go nowhere, and even if they do, the winners tend to get pretty much nothing. |
