yeah...16 years and now he shows up--makes me wonder if the video game companies knew this from the start that it was patented. Also, I wonder if this was ever published anywhere... if not, then what responsiblity to the game companies have...

Apparently, it's the companies' responsibility to look through all the patents ever filed and make sure none of the old, obscure, stupid ones apply to whatever they're doing.

The patent office has needed HUGE reforms for a long time now, primarily a new set of submission criteria. Maybe something like this will finally kick-start the process, especially if big, bad Hollywood gets involved (now that they have such strong ties to the video game industry).

The guy's name is McKool? No way he can lose this case!

But seriously, this is a huge problem with the patent system... the fact that a person can patent an idea that would have been discovered a million times over by other people independantly isn't really a great thing to have. He does have the patent, and he does deserve to win, but his "royalties" should be an extremely negligible amount due to the.. non-uniqueness of his patent. It's like that guy who trademarked hyperlinks and filed suit a few years back. These cases tend to go nowhere, and even if they do, the winners tend to get pretty much nothing.

No one needed that lesson, we all learned that from the Don't Sue People Panda...

Anywho, this guy is an idiot, and if he tries to force SE into bankruptcy Sony and Nintendo will deal with this dumbass. I mean seriously, Nintendo and Sony both have games comming out that will make a bunch of money so if this idiot does this a lot of companies will be breathing down he neck. Oh yeah, this guy really can't patten something like this, because... It is just stupid to do. It is to broad and patents need to be specific.

... *falls onto floor and proceeds to laugh until coughs up lungs*

Wow... Now... that is the epitomy of stupidity righ there. Trying to patent 3D Graphics... Wow... *makes mental note for lunchtable discussion for tomorrow.*

Reminds me of something my teacher said once. "Just because you can, doesnt mean you should."

One more reason for me to feel good about every copyright I ever violated, every piece of software I ever used without paying for (bleeeh) and every kind of damage I ever inflicted to US firms by random DDoSing.
