The article is here. I found it on Slashdot...

This would be awesome to have discs coated with this stuff.... or even cars.

In one of the most convincing technology demonstrations this reporter has witnessed, I was handed a CD, a wire-wool pan scourer and some permanent marker pens, and invited to scratch or mark the discs. Hard as I tried, I could not make a single mark on the disc with the scourer. And the ink simply wiped off.

The only person to have succeeded in damaging the disc had undertaken a determined attack with a Swiss army knife, according to TDK, the company that has developed the coating.

Wow. That sounds awesome. I don't know anything about the New Scientist, but this doesn't sound like bullshit, so I am peeing in my pants as I type this.

Well, they said that the discs could be run over a truck and not even having a single scratch. Now we do that's not true, but now... I wonder how much longer life thoose discs have. :O (I heard that CD's approx is anything between 5-20 years, I have some 20 years CD's still working so...)

I thought I saw something like this a while ago, but it wasn't on the actual disc itself...it was some sort of sleeve for the disc that you could put over it and it would run fine in any CD player. At least I remember seeing a commercial about it a while back.

Ah hell...I used 4000 here. :\

I've seen those in Gamestop. I don't think they were using any difficult-to-damage material, though... it was just an extra protective sleeve.

Perhaps some mod should correct the thread title where it says "scratch-attractive."

I'm assuming it was meant to ward off stuff like dust and regular scratches. A better-than-nothing thing at least.

yay for keeping the pollution ever resistant to degrading

anyway, great idea though, other day i pulled a VCD out of the case, the VCD cracks cleanly through a radius. What a waste of a good film

Awesome. So now I'll be able to just leave my CDs laying around like I do with floppies, instead of trying to find holders for them all. I wonder if Nintendo'll be able to use this for their next system? (Or even Gamecube... *drool*)

FINALLY! It was so annoying when I got this CD from the library and my favorite track would skip forevermore. Until I burned it and it sounded better. It stil had bad quality though..the actual CD had bad quality, prolly because of all the scratches. The computer could read it better than my CD player and stereo. This better come out soon ..I treat my CD's like kings and queens anyway though..really..They're treated right .
