| This thread was created to help beginners with IPS-patcing. Questions about IPS-patching and IPS-files in general goes here, unless other's stated. Explanation of the files: *.nes, *.smc, etc.(ROMs) --> The actual game *.ips --> The unpatched ROM-hack What's an IPS-file? An IPS-file has *.ips as extension. The file, in general, consists of modified data that will be inserted into the unmodified ROM by an IPS-patching program. Why the IPS-format? Distributing ROMs on the internet are considered illegal. The IPS-patch idea was made so ROM-hackers could distribute their hacks "legally" on the net. BEFORE DOING ANYTHING ELSE: Download LUNAR IPS, which is the IPS-patching program covered in this tutorial. You can find it here. When downloaded, unzip the folder where you want it. How to apply a patch 1. Download a ROM (if you haven't it) and an IPS patch (which is the hack). Make a copy of the ROM, since you don't want to overwrite the original game. Rename the file if you wish. 2. Make sure to read any instructions that come with the patch. Some patches require particular versions of the ROM. 3. Run Lunar IPS: 4. Click on the "Apply IPS patch" button. Choose the patch (hack) you want to use: 5. Choose the ROM-file you want to attach the patch to: 6. The hack is now applyed to the ROM. Just run the ROM with your emulator, and you're into it. How to create a patch 1. Run Lunar IPS, and click on the "Create IPS patch" button: 2. Locate and select the original, UNMODIFIED ROM: 3. Select the hack you want to make the IPS-file of: 4. Select a filename for the IPS-patch: 5. The IPS-patch of the hack has been made. This shouldn't get stickied! I can't belive that New people don't read THIS! God gave us eyes for a reason...  I'm not sayin that this ain't a bad idea, and I give DufarC props for taking the time to take snapshots on how to apply the patches. All I'm sayin that people who are new to the game should use some kinda common sense before asking questions like this. |

| The idea is basically nice - but as like many threads in different forums there are people, not reading stickied threads at all, even when the thread is blinking in pink, font size 30 and has twenty exclamation marks in it Other than else - good idea with that explanation how to apply IPS files even for *sigh* "noobs"  Might be merged with an existing FAQ into a general one - so there won't be a mass of cluttered up stickied threads with overlapping questions and answers here  |

If such a thread will be created again, I'm sure DarkSlaya got some work to do (points to post two) .And yes, the title should be something like: "DON'T READ THIS, BECAUSE THIS IS AN AUTOMATIC HACK CREATOR"... Nice ideas from HyperHacker, DarkSlaya and Zen, *laughs*... I don't think we need a flash movie. That would be cool, but someone then has to make it. And my voice is NOT the one which will be in it. | Yeah, this will be good for those who don't know how to do the ips patches. So anyone know how to attatch the rar files to the genesis? I see some hacks released for Sonic games and they come in rar formats. I tried ips winning the thing onto it but it dont do anything. |
