I always wanted to escape from society. The whole thought of being so free... Than the reality part of it kicks in and yeah. Anyhow, best of luck with this |

Not going to work or happen. 1) Nobody can get by in a developed country through only using a barter/trade system; 2) You can't get by without ID; 3) It's better to try fix your life up and get yourself on some solid ground BEFORE you think about backpacking your way across Canada. ... 4) And if you're going to travel like that, *WHY* Canada? Do Europe. |

If I was going to do it, I'd go far north Canada where hardly anyone lives. I'd become a wilderness man and live off the land. I'd have to bring a parka or something. Of course, no internet would be a drag.... |

...You'd need a LITTLE more than a parka. Of course, "north Canada" could be basically anywhere a few hundred miles from the border. |

Originally posted by MorbidMolly Yes, you could say that society is a sort of a matrix. If you look at it, we are stuck in it and have next to no control. Still, you have to know that a computer can only be as smart as the person who programmed it. (well kinda) As humans don't know all that much about the human brain I doubt some robots will. Anyways go for it, try it out, if you die well... Visit me in Kansas I'll try and bring you back somehow. I guess I can get off my lazy ass and find the way to resurrect people, if I have to... |

Originally posted by Legion I don't think theres anything above Baffin Island settlement-wise so I think its pretty much a safe bet you arn't going to go any futher north than that. Baffin Island Island is the big long island north of Hudson Bay. If I could travel anywhere and just lose society, It would be on those islands in Polynesia. I figure that since they're islands in the middle of the pacific, they haven't been touched a whole lot by the "civilized" world. Yeah, they were used as supply ports and shit so they have been converted to Chirstianity and they probably know one of the bigger European languages but still. I think its the farthest place on earth you can get from civilization with out freezing to death. |

Your idea is better. But I just really like the cold. Either northern Canada or Alaska is where I plan to retire one of these days. Preferably somewhere away from a huge society, but maybe not so much society itself. It would be nice to have a few people around but not many. And if there were, I would have to live at least an hour away from them. Ah, peace and quiet. And maybe not having any internet and tv would be a good thing. You could get some serious relaxation time if you weren't bothered by all the problems in the world. Just you and the vast wilderness where no one can bother you. |

Alaska has roughly 640,000 people and the number increasing at about 10,000 annually. The population of Juneau, College, Anchorage, and Fairbanks combined is nearly 1/2 of the states total population with Anchorage having 1/3 of the states total population. Fairbanks and Juneau have populations of 30,000 and Fairbanks 10,000. So unless you pick one of those cities, you are certain to live in a city with about 2,500-8,000 people. Though 30% of the states cities have a population less than 2,500. Alaska is sounding a pretty nice place to retire to right about now... Live in a city that has about the same amount of people as your old highschool. Go ice fishing and hunting quite often so its pretty damn close to being a wilderness man. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of those small cities have power and phone lines also =D Have fun retiring Legion |

Legion: Do you really want to have to make a 1-2 hour trip (one way) each week for supplies? I'd live at least near a small village of 5,000 people or so. Just in case. |
