]]

hacks [[
ID, name, original, author, customscreenshots, screenshots, isdemo, review, votes, rating, downloads, description
]] Planned addition: longdescription, for showing in the actual page

to be added, is hack comments. More later, but here's the general idea of how this will work...

EDIT: also, to continue, if I'm going to continue hosting this (which I plan to do so, heh), we can't exactly install other things. Nor do many hosts allow you to install other things, so just try and keep it to php/MySQL, and preferably build off of what we have (because I really, really hate having to customize things)

EDIT again: I would also like to point out that much of what Gavin said is completely doable by myself using the current structures, it'd just take a bit of ... remodeling... to fix. Plus, for standardized formats, I take care of that... anything I get gets ZIP'd and put up, using generally the STORE compression (since it's not going to matter if 50kb gets downloaded, pft) and such. All screenshots are PNG'd by yrs. truly, etc, etc, etc....

In short, I've been handling all of these things, and it's no major problem.

Sorry about possibly severly limiting your ideas, but I'm the only one with FTP access (and plan to keep it that way for a while until I manage to get some stuff working properly and marked and such and such.)

Meh.

We can avoid the issue of FTP access for a looong long time, and possibly altogether, very easily. We simply set a standard for the SQL database structure and have everyone develope independantly. Of course there will be times when certain pieces will have to be put together for them to function, i am still confident though that these standards will solve the problem

Yay, this is finally going to get off the ground. It severely needs a general ROM hacking wiki though.

Dan, haven't seen you in ages! I appoint you official ROM hacking wikie expert, and no, you don't get paid . Hit me up on AIM or IRC sometime if you're interested in helping, or even if you're not.

Heh, I wouldn't say I'm an expert at all. I'm just a wiki fanatic. I could get started on a wiki, but I just need to figure out an actual structure, or the whole thing would end up as an unmaintainable mess.

I may join too (if that's ok), since I have a Mega Man 2 hack which will be released soon, and I need a place to put it, these archives are the perfect place. As some of you know, I have my own pages at Geocities (http://www.geocities.com/durfarc), but since that page always runs out of bandwith, the download can't only be stored there...

I checked on the Cpanel main site, and apparantly Cpanels are quite expensive. I was REALLY lucky..I've had it for more than a year, and i would have had to pay like....over 1000 bucks...thank god.

.tk redirect domain names are free, however it creates a small pop-up window. Nothing annoying, though.

yes. I know about .tk. But I don't really like it, it puts the domain name on every link on ur site, even affiliates. I don't know if all domains are like that, or if there is a way to block that though, but I am sure others here would know.

If you're talking about the page title, it can be bypassed by adding

well, i can say without almost 100% certainty that this website should be placed on a more prominent, and paid for, hosting service. If this expense must come out of my own pocket, then it must. But i feel strongly on this.

The issue of domain is just something to keep in mind, we still have a lot of planning and work to do before we really need to act on it.

yah, i feel you. we have a lot of structual planning to do on a whole, and the wiki is just one piece of the puzzel.

I'm willing to help out with this kind of stuff. PHP coding, database modeling (contrary to most people even having done development on this very board, I'm educated in the subject and got the highest grade in that class), temporary hosting of the project; database account, ftp account, website. (Per "romhack.wootest.net" or something similar until we get a 'real' host.)

I think this project should also have a centralized game documentation part. As in collaborative documentation of level formats, tile formats, asm code, etc. Just clarification of a part that I -really- think should be in there.

I also think that we stages to roll out features in should be laid out. First basic user code, then basic hack code, then teams, then more advanced hack code, then documentation, etc.

Alright, lemme go ahead and clarify something real fast.

As long as I am the main coder (which I probably will be for a while here), I am not looking for help. I am looking for suggestions on things to put in.

I've just been thinking about this a lot and I was beginning to kinda dislike having asked for help and such like this, given the fact we don't currently need it and it'd very likely slow me down more than help...

okk. Than just say it. Here i'll HELP you do it.

" Don't ask to help, we don't want your help. We have everything under control. We made this thread just to let you know what we are doing. We dont want you guys to help us so that it might be better than possible."

So you're basically saying you want to do all the work. I mean, based on your site, no offense, but I bet some people can make a much better layout then that. I am not trying to start a fight or argument or anything...But if people want to help you, you should accept it. Maybe the results will be better.

Wow, you put that into such better words... if you ignore the end.

And, when dealing with the layout of my site, it's perfectly find as it is. It's simple and gets the job done. I don't need any fancy crap.

So, yes, what he said:

"Don't ask to help, we don't want need your help. We have everything under control. We made this thread just to let you know what we are doing. We don't want need you guys to help us so that it might be better than possible because it's fine as it is."

(allow me to clarify slightly: Suggestions are very welcome. However, we/I do/does not need any help right now.)

well Xk's already said this... and it is off topic... but Xk's layout on his site is near perfect in my book... not too many images, not too flashy, links to place, no 404's, and he's getting content.. that's all a site needs in my book.. ..

...nice idea. Very nice idea. If this is done, this will be one of the many improvments in the rom hacking community. It will be even helpful with the "I can help you with..." thing. That will helps a whole lot for people to pinpoint users that will help with specific stuff that that person needs.

This would be nice to see working. Really nice and incredible idea.

I disagree. Assembling a small panel of PHP and SQL experts to review and complete the project seems the most efficient way to achieve our desired results. Placing a large project in the hands of a single person is only inviting slower and possibly less professional developement. 2 heads are better than 1, and 3 or 4 aren't bad either.

Also this project is all about serving the community, and as such, it would be fitting if it was built by the community.

Jesper that's fantastic, thanks for your interest in the project . And yes, i completely agree with the centralized game hacking resources. When this idea was first concieved, i believe that the hacking resource was in fact the backbone of the proposed site, i just went off on a small tangent about the emphasis on the 'community' portion, heh.

About feature developement: thanks, i think you can offer the exact kind of experience we will need: someone who knows the in's and out's of working on a (as it seems to me) large project like this.

I would like to get a discussion going, probably on IRC or whatever other popular chating medium the base coding/managing team uses, sometime soon as i believe this subject lays right in the thick of what we need to plan out to get this moving.
