| I don't think the situation of "we know this kid will fuck up the future, so let's deal with it now" could happen in the first place. Why? Because this involves a prediction that interacts with the event being predicted, and if that happened, it would result in contradictions that make the ability to predict it impossible. | |||

| I'm fairly sure it is a hypothetical question, Mutation. Other than that, you are correct. Determinism at macro-level is contradictory, because determining the future will mean having to know what knowledge they will have in the future, and if you know that, you will have the knowledge at the present time, not in the future. |

| The question is formed as a "If not x, then y"... it's true that there's no such thing as knowing what'll happen in a counterfactual scenario, but it's generally considered in philosophy to simply be nagging to insist on that point. For example, the consequentialist viewpoint demands that one be able to compare the world in which one did X against the modal world in which one didn't do X in order to determine whether doing X was "right". If you say that that comparison can't be made, then.. it's useless. I guess the related question is whether knowing X will occur can somehow affect whether it does, and hence that person doesn't really know X will occur. Obviously, this problem can be solved by tweaking the statement to be "X will occur unless I do Y"... which is of the form of the original question. |
