Some questions:

What do you want to do with your computer?
Is your current computer's performance hindering you?
If it is hindering you, in what way is it hindering you?

Whether you upgrade or buy a new computer really depends on what you want to do, and I guess what parts are available.

Considering that if you wanted to upgrade to a newer CPU, you'd need to upgrade your RAM, Motherboard, Power supply (comes with case, so just get a new case) etc as well, you pretty much may as well get a new PC.

However, if you just wanted to upgrade your RAM a little, it's probably worth it to see if you can just find some compatible RAM for your PC.

Ah my problem is i need more hard drive space which can easily be upgraded though i also dont know if i need a new processor or more ram or maybe my video card isnt enough because i like to run newer games and emulate playstation and nintendo 64 roms which is a bit slowed down sometimes to where it crashes my computer so just wondering if its worth upgrading some games id like to run are: Doom 3 and Need for Speed underground 2, HALO 2, and other games around that level what kinda upgrades would i need or is it more worth it to just build a new system?

What is: If you want to play the newest games at once, you'd better buy a new one, because when you're upgrading, you may think that "since I upgraded, I have to keep this computer for an extra year" or something. But if you can stand the slowdowns or still can play old games, you can upgrade the old one. My old computer only had 333mhz and 64mb RAM, but I had it until the middle of 2003, when I got this one, which has 2,53ghz and 1024mb RAM.
If money isn't all that matter, you can buy a new one, but you can also upgrade the old one's weak parts. And since I'm not a master in computers, you'd better find it out on your own, but this is at least my advice in some or another way...

If you wanna play newer games, like Doom 3, chances are it's better for you to buy a new PC.

For games, make sure to buy one with a fast processor (AMD Athlon or Intel Pentium 4) and a good fast video card. DO NOT GET A CELERON! It will have a spaz attack and die at the mere sight of the game CD, and I'm talking before you even put it in the CD Drive (okay, i have a think against Celerons, but really, they're not designed for the job).

Dead easiest way to get what you want: Look up the minimum requirement specifications for the games you want to play, and get a MINIMUM of those specs in your new PC. This will ensure it will play those games well, and will also be able to play new stuff that comes out.

Ram is very important too, 512 is almost becomming a standard now, but if you're wanting to play games like Doom 3, etc, I'd highly recommend you go for at least 768 or 1gig +. And is your ram SDR or DDR? DDR is the better and higher quality stuff that you should definently have, no matter what these times.

For a processor, I'd say go for an Anthlon 2400+ if you want something a little cheaper yet still pretty good. Although again, if you're wanting to play these kinds of games at max with no problems what so ever, 3.0ghz+ is good to go.

For a graphics card I'd say try getting an ATI Radeon Pro 9800. They're really great and just under the new nVidia GeForce 6400's. But they're a little on the expensive side, still they used to be about 300$ and I'm sure they've gone down a lot now to about 150$ or something around there.

So in my opinion, I'm not so sure if it's exactly necessary to completely buy a new system, I've laid out the basics in what you'll need for good gaming, a good amount of Ram, High CPU, and a good Graphics Card, but if you have a crappy sound system, maybe a dirty monitor, or some old crappy mouse or something, go for a new system or something.

That's my 2 cents, heck what do I know?
