I've been playing with ASM for a bit and I'm recording all the outcomes of byte 1.
So far I have:

00 = Mario Palette
01 = ??? Gold Yellow thing
02 = Grey Palette
03 = ??? Grey thing
04 = Yellow Sprite Palette
05 = ??? Yellow thing
06 = Blue Sprite Palette

I suppose the even numbers are palette changes?
Anyways, I'll work more on research type things for SMW hacking.
I'm new at this, so don't yell at me too much!

Excuse me... but... what byte 1? $7E0001? or $7E0000? or what?

Graphics byte #1 in HyperHacker's sprite editor.

Here's how to use it:
Get the sprite palette you want (8-F). Subtract 8 from it (0-8). Multiply it by 2. If you want to make the sprite use sprite page 3 or 4 (instead of 1 or 2), add 1. There you have your byte.
