They've been going up steadily since the price of crude has started sky rocketing. The interesting problem about the price rise before the current "crisis" was that the gas companies were raising profits at fuel stations that were disproportionate to the actual price of refinement to a barrel of crude. The prices changed based on "market differences", aka the companies adjusted the prices higher Thursday at around 4:30 or right before markets closed. It is a stupid, stupid thing. The gas prices are going up now because Venezuala is still in strike. Nigeria is in strike. Norway just got off of strike. YUKOS went out of business. China needs more oil. The list goes on.

$2.18/gal and not slowing down, it seems. Since some pipeline in who-knows-where fucked up, it'll be going even higher. I hate it here... |

Gas prices (known as "Petrol" in Australia) have soared dramatically in recent years here. It's horrible. I am so glad I don't have a car right at the moment, they're way too expensive to run. ACCC Adelaide Petrol Prices A while ago they were trying to find ways of stopping it from rising, but I think they've long since given up. (edited by Tarale on 10-26-04 10:06 AM) |

Originally posted by Ziffski Actually, they were going to, but the goverment managed to stop it. For the 12th time btw, the gas prices in Norway are quite high too, but what's even more strange is that an oil company (Statoil) has many gas-stations here in Norway, but on one station, the price was HALF of the price on another one. Nothing major, just weird |

It's 10-10.30 SEK litre now in Sweden. or 45,46 SEK per gallon. Which is $6.5 per gallon. As you see, US have cheap fuel. |

Originally posted by black dragoon Before, we didn't have too many sources to get it from, and our quantity of oil in those sources was dropping, so the price went up. Now, the price is going slightly down only because we are ripping shitloads of oil from the Middle East, so we have lots more. However, if you'd bother reading other topics, you'd realize that the global trend will have gas prices going up, because oil is a non-renewable resource (well, it takes 1000+ years to renew), and it is being consumed quickly, so everything that uses oil, including gas, will go up in price over time. |

No. During Bushes First Term, the gases were fairly stable. Then 911 happened. People invested in oil. So cost climbed slightly. Then terrorists attacks in the middle east increased and all around the world terrorists were committing attacks. Investors got scared and put more money into the barrel. And now, with winter approaching, it is immature and stupid to say that they are going down. They've stabilized up 10 cents higher than they were about a month ago. With winter more gas demands in the most industrialized countries = higher prices.

I wish they'e gone down. I paid $2.07 today, almost $15.00 and my tank wasn't even empty. We had a gas break during the month of Aug., where gas was about .8 cents cheaper and even a few weeks into Sept., the prices stayed down due to all the hurricanes that hit us to help everyone out a bit. |

Prices are fluctuating wildly here. The other day it was like 1.83 and it shot up to 2.15 just yesterday evening. In a lot of places there are usually times of day or days of the week to buy cheaper gas so that might have something to do with it.

This is last week. 99.9cents/L for diesel 95.9 for 87 octane 1 gallon US = 4.52L With the current conversion, it's around 3$US/gallon But the ingenious me doesn't buy fuel anymore. Diesel engines have the proterty to be able to run on waste vegtable oil. (There's a few things to know in depth but the process is very basic) Filter it. Blend it during summer with some diesel (80% veggie, 20% diesel) and voila, you just saved a hell lot of money. I've seen people here easely save around 1500$ cdn/year Some extreme cases, they save up to 3000$cdn/year in fuel 3K is a hell lot of money. (edited by Blades on 11-02-04 12:00 PM) |

w00t! Go biodiesel! Blades, do you have any idea if the diesel Smart cars will run that without any mods? Those get 70 mpg on diesel anyway and they're coming to the US in the near future. Because they're fuel- and space-efficient, quite safe for their size (they beat an Escort in a 40 mph crash test), and CUTE, they've gone onto my list of possibilities for our next car. According to Rando, that local biodiesel co-op I mentioned in the car thread is actually up and running. It would be awesome to have to barely pay to drive. (And it would be REALLY awesome if I could get a job in town so I could bike to work, which would save a lot of gas as well...)

Get an older 96-97 Passat or 97-98-99 Jetta TDI. They do 50mpg bur are way bigger than the smart cars and a lot more powerful. (120mph no problem) As for the Mercedes Smart, it's a 2 seater. and has a small trunk. In my own opinion, the older vehicule is going to be as efficient, has have it's proofs and you won't mind installing a veggie kit. Questions ? (There's a lot more info to know than I'm saying here) The Smart uses common rail diesel witch is recent technology and I have no clue on long term use, even on standard diesel. The older technology (VW Diesel 2003-, 1999- Benz, older Volvos, toyota, nissan, ford) all use what is called Rotary Pump (aka Bosch VE) They technology has been around for 75 years. You know what I find funny? Guess where the biggest oil spot is in the world? Saudi? Nope. Iraq? Nope. The middle east itself? Nope. It's off the shore of Louisianna. But here's the kicker. We can't touch it because of environmental laws. Sucks, don't it? |

In New Mexico 2 Years ago, the Gas Prices were about $1.50, and in California, at that time (I took a trip there the same summer ), the Gas Prices were about $2.00 (and to me at that time, that was A LOT ). Now New Mexico's Gas costs about $1.90 to $2.08 (depending on the grade), so,... now I don't even think I want to know how bad California's Gas Prices are. And soon enough, the Gas Prices will be even higher. ... George Bush is a Greedy Fucking Stupid Bastard. ,... (he doesn't ever want to use alternative resources, all he wants to do is take Oil from the Middle East and make him and his buddies even richer) (Damm 6/10 of America for voting that bastard in again ) (edited by Atma X on 11-03-04 04:43 PM) |
