Hehe, I just installed some additonal ram to my little iBook. All I can say right now is YES, oh god YES, YES YES YES YES YES!!!!

hehe, Firefox has picked up speed dramatically. I knew it was a memory problem that was causing it to be a little weird from time to time, but now it's behaving itself MUCH better

I had 256Mb, now I have 640Mb.

The difference is dramatic and the scrolling in Firefox is now so smooth it's sexy.

Don't you just love it when adding more RAM actually makes a noticable difference?

How does Firefox chew up 256MB of memory? Do you have a lot of other stuff running in the background or something?

I'd like to get some more RAM so a few specific games in MAME stop thrashing my swap file. I've got a single 256MB PC2700 module in there right now...I should see if CompUSA has them on sale again, as 512MB would be oh so loverly.

I'm not sure how it chews up so much, but I think it's that it's still beta and a little weird in OS X.

It's better than version 0.9 was, that'd work itself up into a crash within an hour of using it. Total freeze meltdown.

I have other programs that will really test things, but I had noticed that Firefox is weirder in OS X than it was in Windows...

Nearly everything goes better with more RAM (except for DOS).

You that Camino is a browser specifically for OS X, right? The screenshot looks like Firefox.

Camino's a bit different, and nowhere near as customisable. I like it, but I like Firefox a HELL of a lot more.

and yes, most things do run better with more RAM. The exception being my old Win98 box which actually ran worse... don't ask me why.

You're right. Just to mention it, on my old computer (from 1998), it was only 64mb RAM, but when I bought this bad boy in 2003, I got 1024mb RAM! That was a great, noticable difference. Not only the RAM, but everything got better, including the internet connection. That was a great experience...

it isn't that Firefox that chews up 256MB of memory but the OS takes a lot of it up, thus, not leaving much for all the other applications. Thus, when the percentage of memory taken up by the OS is less than half, then you will have more memory speed up.

anyways, my friend's iBook didn't run so good with 256 but when he upgraded to 1.5GB of RAM, it flies

an iBook is a laptop made by Apple

as for 512mb not being enough, i think it is operating systems taking too much memory

The thing is, other than Firefox, OS X is quite efficient with memory.

I don't get any lag with Photoshop, or any other application, only Firefox. Thankfully, there haven't been any major problems since 0.9, like I said. That little doozy didn't work AT ALL, so I had to use Camino for a while. Firefox would lock up the machine until I force quit...

And yep, it's an apple, yaaay!

Well, Win98 has problems managing 512MB or more, and a lot of older CPUs and motherboards can't cache more than x megabytes (my limit is 128MB), resulting in slower performance.

Yeah, I went up to 512MB. It's a known bug in Win98SE, there may have actually been a patch for it, but I can't remember. I remember looking it up and I thought there was a hotfix or something, but I decided to install WinXP instead.

I just know that within the hour, I was getting weirdness. ie, not enough memory to run AIM. Yes, AIM.

Weee....and I've noticed a dramatic improvement in expos

HAW. I can only imagine how incredibly unstable such a feature would be in Windows...

I think there is a way to make the alt-tab thing to have a small preview of the window instead of icons, but that's it.

I have 512 MB RAM, but i'm considering buying more. It's just not enough when you run some programs and a memory consuming game.
