Recently, we picked up the DVD of The man in the iron mask.
The modern version is with Leonardo Dicaprio, and one of the few movies featuring him I can watch without wanting to puke.
If only we had studied the box better; it turned out we bought a movie produced in '76.
After watching it, I have to say it had its charms. Obviously, actors didn't have to do a great job then either, and some of the scenes were very funny because of the combination of overacting and smushy violin music.
But said music really set the overal feeling of the movie. They somewhat turned the story from a drama to a romance, with a girl who really could've used some powder to be a bit less shiny, but I liked watching it anyway.
The costumes were more accurate than the modern version, save for the male hairdo's, which couldn't hide the timeframe the movie was shot in XD

My point basically is; are there old movies you enjoy (more) than their current versions (if any)?

Yes, in fact there is. I like the old Star Wars movies more than the new ones.

I thought this was going to be about music.

But yes, the original movie is generally better than the remake. The only example I can think of right now is the Manchurian Candidate, although the new one wasn't bad.

The original Psycho is MUCH better than the remake.

Other than that, I'm not really sure... Casablanca was very good, I don't think there's been a remake though, which is a goood thing.

Compared to the book, the movies were crap. And I know that could be said about 99.9% of all book to movie works, but in this case it's especially true. Same goes for The Count of Monte Cristo. Seriously, the latest rendition of it isn't even in the ballpark. They left out about 90% of the book but beyond that, they changed SO many things, many important things. Ugh.
The Man in the Iron Mask is an awesome story.

Taryn - Casablanka? Well I think the version starring Peter beardsley and Nora Dinglebat is the definitive one *hears crickets chirping as no one gets the pub*

*coughs* Anyways, I agree with you about Psycho, some of the things Gus Van Sant added in there were unnessecary. I also prefer the original "Texas Chainsaw Massacre", but that's just me

Sweet jesus did the remake suck. I can't believe you made me remember it. I now hate life again..

As far as book to movies, you're right Leg. But it's hard. Take The Hours for instance, a book that puts a lot of weight on thought moreso than dialogue.. that's difficult to convert to film, so when they did, a lot of it was left out. I imagine the same is done for all novels.
