It's something I've always wanted, The thing is, I'm split on which one to get, I've narrowed down my choices to three basically....

4th Gen 40Gb Apple Ipod

Iriver I-HP 140 with FM Tuner

Creative Jukebox Zen Ultra 60Gb.

They all cost roughly the same, but I was wondering what are people's opinions on these machines and if anyone has used any of them. Comments, e.t.c - Especially the IPod, as word on that has been VERY mixed. I've heard all sorts of horror stories about it (Crappy sound quality, Crappy battery e.t.c).

So help me people

I'm not willing to go with anything less than 40Gb by the way, as I think I need that much for my CD collection

Which ever one of those is the most expensive is your best bet of how good the quality is.

Cool especially that it has less gb of storage and costs more, it'll definately have better quality than the others.

I have an iPod, but I investigated alternatives first before I bought it.

I find my sound quality to be just fine, although if I do have a dodgy file, I tend to notice. This can also be put down to the fact that it's playing *in my ear* so it's probably more obvious too.

My battery life is good. There are stories of batteries failing, but they have also been in cases where the iPod was used daily and charged daily, and this can be a little rough on any battery.

Personally, I like my iPod. It had the features I wanted, and the capacity I wanted... it was also the most intuitive to use.

The clickwheel is sheer joy. JOY!!

I use the Contacts feature to keep phone numbers handy that I need (cause I'm hopeless with remembering numbers), and addresses and other misc. Address Book info I need.

It stores my entire MP3 collection, so I can listen to any song I own at any time. That in itself is awesome. And it is pretty easy to navigate to find the song I want too.

And I can use it as an external Firewire or USB 2.0 Hard Drive to store extra stuff (ie, drawings, programs, etc)

That's why I picked the iPod. Your needs in an MP3 player might be different from mine.... so what you might want may vary... but, that's what motivated me to buy one of those gorgeous shiny pieces of white goodness......

I don't think you should get the one with built-in tuner. Can't tell about iPod but my friends and I have had good experiences with Creative... All of them should work like a disk or a memory stick or a SD Card or whatever you want to call it.

I still cannot understand how you will ever be able to use 40 GB on an MP3 player...

Then why buy an ipod if you're only going to use barely 5% of its space...?

300 CD's? That's about 8,000 tracks. Judging that each track is about 4Mb each, that's 32Gb (I... think....)

Therefore I'm using a LOT of the space

That's not the idea. It's so that you don't need to carry around a bunch of CDs or memory cards, just dump them all onto your player. (Hell, I could dump my whole HD onto that thing twice and still have more than enough room for music. )

I assume you're looking for a portable system? (The word 'jukebox' implies a home system, but I don't think there are home iPods. ) I have a Panasonic SL-SX430, it plays MP3s from a CD. (You can use CDRW, of course. ) It's great, never skips, lasts for hours on a good pair of batteries, and it's almost waterproof. (It also has an awesome 'live' equalizer setting. The Inuyasha themes sound so cool with that...) Of course you only get 700MB per disc, but CDs are small. (I only have around 250MB that I really listen to anyway. ) BTW: The manual says you can't use Random mode for MP3s, but guess what? It works great.

On the other hand, if you're looking for a home system, I would not suggest the Panasonic SA-AK410. I might have a bad one (I can't return it, my dad sent it from across the country for Christmas), but it's got a lot of problems. It skips the first second of most songs, won't play WMA even though it says it can, and the timer function is useless, especially as an alarm clock. (And really, what else would you use it for?) It comes on at a random time within about 20 minutes of what you set it for, just enough to make you late, and when it does the volume level is random, which means either you won't hear it or you'll panic at the sudden, very loud wakeup call. (And your neighbours won't be too happy either. ) It also skips a lot, and occasionally switches from Single Album to Entire Disc mode. (You can't switch it back without the remote, either.) If you don't mind all that, though, it's not too bad.
