It's like a neverending cycle. WIndows whines at me to install Service pack 2, I do so, and my comp slows down to about 20% of it's normal speed, anything takes AGES to run and shut down, surfing is murderously slow.. I end up uninstalling it out of sheer frustration, only for WIndows to insist a few days later on installing the pack. Has this happened to anyone else? |

Use Windows 2000 Pro SP4 FOR GREAT JUSTICE! Man...I totally feel sorry for some of you XP SP2 users...you wouldn't believe the amount of times my mother's boyfriend has to go out and fix this kind of stuff (he's in computer repair and related)... |

Using both Windows 2000 SP4 and Win XP SP2, thought on diffrent computers. It can be hardware troubles, updated the video/sound/other-card? I have no problems at all with SP2, i'm not noticing any major diffrences. Nor in functionality or speed. But it's something you should install... if you dare. It can be spyware/virus too, that may sound obvious. But that was the case when my computer was slow... a virus. (edited by Kitten Yiffer on 10-19-04 02:51 PM) |

I also had no problem at all. This is no big deal, since I installed SP2 right off a fresh XP installation from a CD offline. Then only the critical updates via WindowesUpdate came following As for SP2: If it messes up the comp, the only way to stay somehow sure, is to get SP1 and all relevant security patches except SP2 itself. Rely on a good personal firewall and an antivirus with an actvie guardian watching the pages and files you open. Also you should pay attention what to download and open anyway. And hold your anti-virus and Windows up to date, avoid IE and Outlook (Express) if possible, and the major security holes are closed without the need of SP2 |

Your comptuer is evil, Ellis. You need to perform an exorcism. You will need candles, holy water, garlic, crosses and uh.. some other stuff that sounds like it might work. Eh, all computers whine that they want the service packs. You can turn off the Windows Update, then it shuts up and goes away and doesn't bother you -- and then you just update from windowsupdate.microsoft.com when you want to, not when your PC starts bleating at you. |

there is a registry key (released by Microsoft) that will turn off WindowsUpdate request to update to SP2 at Microsoft's web site. However, I'm not sure how hard it will be to find that key. | |||

Hmm, I have been sitting here for hours and all of a sudden the comp got really fricken slow for about 20 minutes. Then just a few minutes ago a dialog pops up saying "Auto matic updates have been installed successfully. blah..." "Do you want to restart you computer now?" And of course the option "No" has been grayed out and is inaccessible. *Gives the big M the finger.* I'm glad this isn't my computer, hurrah for Windows 98. It's so old no one bothers writing virii for it anymore. But c'mon, it installs shit without telling me, and then asks an annoying question where I can only answer in the affirmative. Requirement 1 for being a windows programmer: Assholedom. |
