To quote a post on a forum I probably shouldn't link to here:

I was downloading some files from KaZaA Lite++, as usual; Suddendly my computer restarted by itself. I thought "oh crap, a virus..." Then I thought about it, "could this 'virus' execute itself without being opened?" Besides I got installed Norton.
I realized most of my desktop shortcuts desapeared... strangly only the ones of programs I bought were still there. As I was trying to 'restore' everything, I noticed the speed droped horribly. I scanned my system 3 times and no virus whatsoever. My concerning became a sort of state of panic when I played back a song from My Shared Folder THERE WAS A LINK SAYING BUY IT!!! That really phreaked me out!!! That thing came out of nowhere!! Now I don't even want to think about such jokes as "signs your IPS has given you up to RIAA." Please tell me I got a virus, I don't care; I'll format up, JUST TELL ME IT WAS A VIRUS PLEASE.

Anybody heard of things like this happening? Sounds pretty freaky to me. You can bet I wouldn't be going back online without backing up all non-executeable files, formatting, reinstalling, and changing my MAC address.

Could've easily been hacked though since most people would be gullible enough to think of RIAA doing that or someone relatively similar.

And if they were...well...the public wouldn't take it very well, especially those that could do something about it.

Well, I had Kazaa lite installed before but got tired on it and uinstalled it. I had better luck with E-mule.

And if anything, why would RIAA have more rights to hack your computers than the hackers? ~_~ (in others words, I have hard time beliving the story. He may have gotten something but not from RIAA...)

I highly doubt it, coming from someone who was 'phreaked' out.

I mean, really. People should be more careful phreaking, it's just not safe.

Phreakers have been around before hackers. Steve jobs was a phreaker even I heard (made a box which you could do free calls with).

Think people which tries to screw up phone systems, and like to fool it so they can call for free or something.

If the RIAA did that, you could sue the RIAA and then be like, "Fuck you, now you aren't taking my MP3s or my shit, and im suing you"

It's like a police officer breaking into someones car while they're not present and then breaking open their glovebox, and then finding weed. They can't do shit because that was not what they were looking for, and they have to pay for the broken glovebox and can be sued.

I think the case is that the kid is just dumb.

Chances are, his computer is riddled with spyware, and its not uncommon for spyware to do those types of things to your computer. Well, I mean the lock up, the netstall, the 'dissapearance' of icons.. I put that in quotes, because we've all had windows crash or stall like that, end up closing or minimizing whatever is taking most of the focus, and finding that our icons havent refreshed.

As for the link thing.. I bet he forgot to click the section to DL MP3s, and downloaded the link by accident like a moron.

How would you get a virii while downloading audio files? If that's the case, if you went on the internet a website with an embedded audio file could automatically upload software to your computer, and then we'd all be fucked.

My point is as long as you know what you're downloading, and you look at the filetype before you download it, and it isn't an executive file or a compressed file; you should be fine. I've had Kazaa Lite for about a year with no virii. And all the time that i had Kazaa (2-3 years ago) the most problems that i would have would be running Kazaa would be the spyware, and i would just scan and remove the spyware, and it would be gone..

So you people and you're viruses, you're crazy :-p

They found a vulnerability in JPEG files that allows an attacker to execute code.... it wouldn't surprise me if there were a vulnerability in an audio file.... even the most seemingly innocent things are no longer as safe as they once seemed...

Midi files had a security hole with DirectX, thought it have been fixed and anyone with the newest updates and all shouldn't have that security hole.

Hadn't heard about any virus using that Midi security hole either.

If you don't have patches you can get infected by JPEGs (I don't think there even is a patch for that yet ), MIDIs or just being pinged by a virus. Really, it sounded like just Windoze being stupid at first. His computer overheated and rebooted/slowed down to prevent getting too hot, and when it came back to Windoze it decided to delete/not show the icons. The fact that only the legit ones remained seems odd though, and having the MP3s replaced with links to buy them isn't something a bug would do. I can't imagine even spyware or a virus doing that.

There's a patch for the JPEG Vulnerability, I think.... not sure which one, but I'm pretty sure it's been patched, you just need to WindowsUpdate.

And when my video card overheated on my old PC, I lost icons on the desktop too....

I have never gotten a virus except the short amount of time I used Kazaa (maybe a month or 2).

Anyone who uses Kazaa deserves to get virus. Fuckers probably just using it for (child) porn.

I got a worm infected with a virus (W32.Opaserv carrying W32.Busm.1445...double your pleasure ) last year, seemingly out of thin air. It somehow crept onto either my new computer (unlikely) or my parents' computer (mmhmm) and spread itself over the network. It corrupted enough executables beyond repair on my new computer that I had to reformat and reinstall everything (fortunately I hadn't installed much of anything yet), and it would have infected my primary computer as well, had I not removed its entry in the Registry before rebooting.

As far as I could tell, no one had downloaded and run anything or visited any suspicious websites prior to the infection. It was just there. Windows was up-to-date, security-wise, and my router's firewall was working fine. Really mysterious...

I gotta agree. I switched over to WinMX a while back and its a whole lot better, heck I havent even found 1 song on it yet that has that screeching and beeping noise like kazaa does. About the only thing I use Kazaa for these days is the more harder to find MP3's by lesser known bands. Other than that I dont use it period, theres just too much crap floating around on it
