I don't know if this is the right forum to place it in, but I posted it here anyway...

I have some small problems... I bought some Memorex 90 min / 800mb rewrite cd's, but when I'm trying to write the cd (with Roxio Easy CD Creator) , the program says that there are only 80min / 700 mb on this cd... Do you know any sollutions? Is it anything wrong with the program or the cd's? Do anyone know about a program that it works? Or something... I've wasted my money on these cd's for no reason... Help!!!

Not all drives can properly support high-capacity CDRs/CDRWs, as it requires the laser to be able to go past the standard 650MB mark (called "overburning"). A friend of mine has an old 1x drive that works with only the original 650MB discs.

What brand/model of drive do you have? If it's a somewhat older one, it most likely only supports 700MB max.

Windows tells me that it's named "HL-DT-ST CD-RW GCE -8481B" . I don't know which brand it is, it came with the computer, which I got in April 2003... But if the laser is to old, as you said, I understand why it happens. This happened to a friend of mine too...

If I'm not mistaken...

[takes a look at Nero real fast...]

Hmm...it is possible to do so in Nero (I'm using 6), by checking Files >> Preferences >> Expert Features. There's an overburn feature on it. However, it clearly states towards the bottom that it doesn't automatically choose the length, you have to set it, that errors may be created at the end of a disc and that it could end up fscking over your CD Burner...so use that option at your own risk.

I wouldn't know what else, other than to use 80 min discs from now on, unless there's a version of Roxio out that supports 90 min discs without screwing your drive over (although yours is newer than mine...so you might have a better shot at it).

Try using cdrtools (there's a Win32 port somewhere). It doesn't have any prevention from overburning (it just sends data to the burner).

Well, I don't want my drive screwed up, so I guess I have to live with the 80min / 700mb cd's.

I didn't see that windows port somewhere...I will try to find it again and take a look at my problems again tomorrow...

the port is here: http://cdrtools.bootcd.ru/

Since it's a Linux program... you're going to have to look through Linux docs . Here's a good one: http://www.ibiblio.org/pub/Linux/docs/HOWTO/other-formats/html_single/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html
