So, that's the question. Did you already tried rom-hacking and stopped? If so, why did you stop (got bored, or lost interest in the area, etc )?
And I'd like to know also if some of the non-rom hackers would like to try rom-hacking. If so, I recommend, coz it is really fun, although it can be a tough work sometimes.

edit: I was quite indecisive on where I should post this thread. I posted it in this forum coz many people that don't rom-hack usually don't visit the r.h. forum very often, so I put it here for the non-rom hackers.

Me trying to rom hack is like getting a toddler to read War and Peace in mandarin.

It just can't be done.

Let's see, have hacked since severeal years back but nowdays I can't just be buggered sometimes.

I have hacked for hand many times, you feel alot more proud when you done it with a hex editor. But at the same time it's annoying hacking for hand. I did this with a game, and got bored becuse of that reason.

...I start again whenever I know enough programming.

I've never really tried, but I'm actually willing to give it a shot. If I'm actually able to finish my work someday, that is.

I haven't, but partly cause I haven't had time, and also cause I wouldn't know what to actually go about doing as far as hacking something. I have no desire to modify anything, so... er.. I guess I don't.

If I had come here to hack ROMs, I'd probably have left a long time ago...

I suppose I could try it someday, I've got a few decent ideas, but I'm more content playing other people's hacks than I am with making my own, I get the feeling I'd just compare mine to everyone else's and I wouldn't be able to really enjoy it as much.

Early last year when I was unemployed, I started working on a Milon's Secret Castle editor for a friend. It was written in C++ using GTK (a cross-platform toolkit) for the GUI. Said friend cracked the data - they just didn't know anything about application development, but that's one of my areas of experience, so there you go. I got it to a point at which you could view the first eight levels and make some edits to the blocks and level content and see the changes in the level viewer, but I found a job and didn't particularly feel like programming at home after I'd just spent eight hours doing it at work, and I especially didn't feel like figuring out the evil data recompression algorithm I needed in order to add saving capability to the editor.

A while ago, I tried finding level data in The Addams Family (SNES). I found what seemed to be several data pointers corresponding to the first few doors in the game, but then I got stuck and had no idea where to proceed. It would really help if I knew SNES ASM, but I really don't have the time or interest to work on that right now. My main spare-time focus is getting my and my husband's insanely difficult and complex Dynasty Warriors costumes done for Anime Central, which takes place next May, and I expect to have to put at least 200 hours into them. Looking at my editor actually makes me miss working on it...so I just might feel the itch to get back to it after these costumes are done.

Uh, I made a single attempt in text hacking in an FF3j ROM, I planned to do a German translation via hex editor for that - though it was impossible since I lacked any skills in ASM 6502 or any other assembly language. I would have to expand an NES ROM and in another step to add more message boxes for translation, since German requires more text than English. I'm too lazy

Hacking a game using Lunar Magic is no pure ROM hacking, sure. It is fairly easy and powerful, but you don't go through all hex values or change certain values in the ASM source code of the actual game

I gave it a go with a Megaman 2 (NES) ROM long ago, I did edit the Megaman sprite and all but I screwed u the levels along with it as far as I remember.

The closest i have had to hacking is "savestate editing" via a guide from places such as gamefaqs.com or rpgclassics.com .

I used to have a playstation and a gameshark pro. Gamesharks used to be decent, it had a whole slew of tools to make your own codes, but once people started makeing all the codes, they dropped it, so that they would control the code world.... therefor now, i am a supporter of pelican, and their codebreaker. Any how, i had spent 100's of hours with that gameshark pro trying to develop a (never die) code for bushido blade 2. because one hit can kill you in that game, and my brother and i just wanted to fight and fight and fight, but dying took too much time. i would come close, but it was glitchy. Once you got a fatal hit the playstation would take over the dead character, and slaughter you.

anyhow, thats it for me

I did a little bit of rom hacking a few years ago. It wasn't much really, I never finished a full rom hack or anything like that. I spent most of my time on Earthbound, but then I realised that someone made an editor for it and all that I had done could have been done with the editor in only a few minutes. I worked on a few things after that, but then I stopped rom hacking because I got more interested in programming my own things.

Nope. Never tried and freankly, I don't want to. Mainly due in part that I don't have the time. And the free time that I do have, is usually spent on doing nothing or something else.
