Google has released a new product that you can download. It's a desktop search engine that you can use to find files on your computer using their search engine. The engine runs through a web page interface. Basically you download their software, and install it. After it's installed you will see a new task bor for it in the system tray. It will start to search your computer and index files for easy searching. The system will perform full text searching on pretty much any file you can open in MS Office, as well as cached web pages viewed in IE, chats from AIM or MSN, and emails from Outlook. The cached files don't appear to be the ones from IE's cache files, it seems to do it's own caching... caching multiple copies when the file changes, which lets you view past versions of the pages. If you have it installed, it will also show local search results when you search on google's site. Now, this is still a private search. Essentially it sets up a local web host on port 4664 and allows you to use that web application do do all the searching. No info is sent to Google. If you chose to allow auto feedback reports of crashes and such it will, but nothing else is sent. The web server that does this will not respond to external requests So only 127.0.0.1 and "localhost" will work. A public IP will yield a 404, even if it's a private IP. (192.268.*.*) Overal It's a pretty cool application. Check it out if you wish. |

Yeah, there's been a bit of buzz with these kind of applications lately, particularly as the next version of OS X (Tiger) is going to have a built in function like this. I use "Quicksilver" on my Mac, and it's brilliant. I can find what I want so much quicker and easier. I want to open the Terminal? Click Quicksilver and type "ter" and it comes up and I can open it |

I wonder if OS X will ever run on a PC... Especially considering the changover when they went with the linux core.

I doubt it. On Apple hardware, Apple can control the PC a lot better, resulting in a more stable machine. They don't have to support every dodgy motherboard and obscure video card ever made, they just support the Apple hardware. If they move to PC, they will have to support the myriad of bizarre and quirky hardware out there, and it will result in a less stable machine. And some more information about Quicksilver. Mmm.. quicksilver. Easily the most frequently used and useful application on my PC, although I want to see how Apple integrate the same idea into the OS.... It's a good question, though. If it were possible, I wouldn't think twice about buying it. I have a lot of respect for Apple's approach to hardware and software. Although moving across for me would be possible (all I really need is the IM software, a text editor and Photoshop and I'm good), it would be prohibitively expensive.

A program that generates a list of your files and sets up a web server? No, that doesn't seem suspicious at all. Actually, I'd probably be willing to do it, but Windoze's search works fine and the caching would kill all my free space. |

Quicksilver for OS X does it stuff locally, and I don't think it searches files on mine, but it searches Bookmarks, Playlists, Applications, etc... I can set it up to search more stuff if I want, but I just find it incredibly handy to launch applications using it. Rather than browsing through Applications trying to find the stupid thing. |

Intresting, basically it won't use the network card at all whenever your using localhost. It's good that they take a port like 4664, since if they would use the standard one (80). People with private webserver would have a problem. Wonderful, I hate how slow the inbuilt one is. I'm gonna download it right away and test. |

i see absolutely no attraction to this feature whatsoever. Window's built-in searching works perfectly fine for me on the very rare occasions that i have used it. I don't know, maybe i'm the only one who doesn't close their eyes and throw their files into random folders every other day? Maybe i have some sort of super-memory, because i know where i keep my files *gavin shrugs*

Originally posted by GavinIt's terribly slow however; the future of search is clearly the indexed search, such as Spotlight in Mac OS X 10.4, the search capabilities in Longhorn, and Google's search engine in both its internet search and the Desktop Search app. The attraction is that not only will you have to wait a few minutes to get a list of files with what you were looking for in the name, but you'll actually get a list of files with what you were looking for ANYWHERE in the file, including the name, and in just a few seconds as well. |

Effective File Search > Google. At those rare occasions when I want to search for something, I use that. I like knowing where my stuff is though.. and I do most of the time (even though it's a bit messy). |
