Why are potato chip bags never filled all the way up when you buy them? (I'm sure they don't get filled all the way up because I sure as hell can't eat that fast...)

Actually, it has a bit of air in there fir freshness and so that the chips don't get crushed when the unopened bags are handled.

Saw it on The Food Network. It was an interesting episode of Unwrapped with 'OCD Man that hosted Double Dare'.

Holy shit! Marc Summers still lives? D:

Anyway, yeah but they do end up getting crushed a lot regardless which makes it appear that the bag is more empty than full.

Reminds me of a good thing to do to friends. If they're eating chips, ask them if they want more. If they say yes, then crush the bag.

Yeah I think I've seen that episode of Unwrapped before and that is true about putting air in the bags for freshness.

Now that's funny. I wonder if people have done that to their friends before.

All this time I thought they did that to be cheap communists...
You noticed how high the food prices went up? In my school, we used to buy a bag of chips in the machines for 75 cents as well as a nice 16 oz soda for the same price. Now they antied it up to a dollar each and they raised the 50 cent items to 80 cents and the 65 cent items to 95. I hate the idea that obesity is a disease, it's not, it's the peoples' fault.

You still get the same amount of chips (give or take a couple) in each bag, so don't complain.

I find Lay's to be one of the more liberal ones air-wise - sometimes you need a bit of force to open the bags here. Local brands seem to have less air.

At least, as long the brand measure it in weight. It should be the same. I have seen a cheap brand measuring in DL.

The prices went up in my cafeteria, but i'm sure it's was a question of it being profitable. It didn't get that much more expensive anyway.

Because the bags would then explode. See?

No. If the bag was inflated to as many PSI as it could handle, that wouldn't make it explode. If it was inflated to more PSI than it could handle, then it would explode.

The bag is filled evenly when it comes out of factory, but it's not nearly as 'thick' as it normally is. During transportation to the store, and hell, even in the store, the contents settle; ie some chips collect at the bottom and some on top, but more small chips collect at the bottom because more chips can fit there. That's why it seems like when you open it up, half of it is just air.

I just explained the physics of potato chip bags. I just may need to reevaluate my life.

I think the amount of chips in a bag of chips is determined by weight, not volume.

That always bugs me. You buy a big bag of chips, and it looks like it can hold probably 2 bowls worth. But then you open it, and it's only half full, so you don't get as much food as you expected and you still feel hungry afterward.

BTW Ryan had it right, but he forgot to add 'Zesty Cheese Doritos >' to the front of his list.
