| Rather than a super-serious thread about how fucked up my life is, I thought that I'd pick up this forum with a somewhat anecdotal look at my heritage. This came about tonight when I was sitting at my Thanksgiving dinner with my father's side of the family and asked my grandmum "What information can you give me about the family?". She basically told me a bunch of information I already knew, but also told me where I might be able to find some, and what my original name was. It is apparentely Syviwcowksy. You see, I'm a Ukrainian. Or so I thought... On my dad's sides, tracing up through his dad, we found out my great great great great grandmother may have married into the Royal Family of Imperial Austria, the Hapsburgs. Interestingly enough, the Hapsburgs are decendants of the fabled Merovingians of France, who by French folk legend are traced to Jesus through Magadalene. Wow, I might be a decendant of God. Freaky, eh? But that wasn't enough, it turns out that my family has Siberian, Asian and plenty of Middle Eastern and Indian blood to go around. It turns out that less than 5 generations ago, several Indian and Iranian or something along those lines, married into my family. So, I have lots of that in me. Of course, it got weirder. It may turn out that my conception of us being Ukrainian may be wrong. You see, in WW1 the family was displaced, and for some reason my family won't talk about where we are from, which narrows us down to a few options...A) Ukraine, B) Poland, C) Austria/Hungary, D) Russia. Wow. That is getting freaky. Now, you see, I'm also a noted descendant of the Czar family of Ivan the Terrible. Interesting? Not really. He had a big immediate family, but no son. I'm betting 340 million Russians are related to each other.  Now, I'd go on about how screwed up my mom's side is...But to close it up, as that is a story for another time...I apparentely had a step-grandfather from Quebec. And I have a great uncle named George who would always tell him a joke..."Hey, Papa, why do the Americans have blacks and why does Canada have the Frenchmen?" This old man would start growling, and George would simply say "Because the Americans had first choice" |

| Well, I've got a good bit of scottish blood in me... My mother's father, whose name is Paton, is a subset of a large scottish clan, well known for having Sean Connery as a direct relation to it. I guess that means that we're implicitly related. But man, descendant of God? That's gotta beat all. |

They are the reason I'm here today after all. Oh, and I'm related to George Washington as well, just not by blood. See, George and Martha never had any biological kids of their own. They adopted. And from one of them, that's where the connection is. I remember a long time ago my dad suspected that he was related to Bloody Bill Anderson, a Confederate guerilla but I don't think he ever found factual proof of it. The past certainly is interesting on it's own, but even moreso when you have a personal connection with it. |

All I know is that on my dad's side of the family is that they're from Ireland and my dad says that we used to have a castle there until the Germans took it over. Which seems hard to believe. Which, also, from my mom's side is that my grandpa came from Germany. So, now I have Irish and German blood in me. But then somewhere's along the line I have Native American blood in me as well. Which that's all I know of and nothing more.  |
