I'd like to have a program that views Mode 7 graphics (from a rom, not a save state). It won't have to be able to EDIT the graphics, a viewer is enough.
Can anyone help me in my search?

What game are you going to hack? For MarioKart, there are two track-editors on the net, but I think at least one of them deosn't export graphics directly from the rom. The other one (I believe it uses LunarCompress) opens the grphics in realtime. But if it's pilotwings or anything else, you're going to hack, I don't know...

wasn't there a tool (by evilpeer???) that allowed viewing mode7-grphics... don't know anymore.

If you read my post more carefully, you would see that I'm not going to hack anything. I would just like to view it. And by the way, I'm talking about a Mode 7 tile viewer, not a picture viewer.

Well, I think BGMapper can view mode7 graphics. You just need to open a savestate and then press...I think Shift+7 and it will show mode7 graphics. Then you can also 'hide' the other layers if you want. Not sure if thats what your looking for tho...

Yes, I'm currently using BGMapper, but it would be nice to get something that loads from a ROM as well...

I used VSNES to view the Mode 7 track sections in F-Zero (this was from a save state, but it's better than nothing). Unfortunately it could only view the current panel and not whichever panel the user desired.

You should be able to view Mode 7 tiles in Peer Sprite Viewer, you just need to know what format its in and where its located.

Or at least I think that is true. My most recent work on the program (which was quite some time ago) was for Mode 7 indexed color graphics, which I think is in the current release, but may only be in my WIP version.

Just FYI, a lot of ROMs that use Mode 7 compress their graphics.

Yes, I just noticed that... Whoever that created the first image compressing system should be sued.

Why? Because it allowed complex games to be packed into a smaller ROM size?

I'd rather see formats that are easier to hack -- there will always be greater challenges.

Somehow, when they initially published the game, I doubt they had that in mind.

I'm sure that many companies would leap at the chance to makes their games more hacker friendly. Afterall, they pay lots of money (read: zero money) for their products so they should at least be able to figure out how they work.

hacker friendly...

although theres no straight definition and the term is often used inappropriately, i'd say that editing and investigating (computerrelated) things you werent meant to see/change roughly qualifies you as an hacker.

thats why a hacker-friendly program would somehow miss the point for me.

you could argue about that, however.
personally, i wouldnt call anybody who uses a point 'n click tool to edit super mario world a hacker, thats just stupid.

I could understand someone saying "compression isn't very easy to work with," or "I have a hard time understanding this compression," or even "I'm a newbie and don't know any of this stuff," but whoever says compression isn't very hacker friendly has no concept of who a hacker truly is. If you can only do "hacker friendly" tasks, then you are not really a hacker.

I've dealt with several types of compression myself, and I will admit, it's not easy, but the whole point of hacking is overcoming these challenges. I'm glad they did use compression in these games, because without it most games could only hold a fraction of what they hold. But also, I actually enjoy the challenge of trying to defeat it, which is what hacking is truly about.
