Erik the red day. Well, vikings was the fist Europeans to land on America. Or Vinland as they called it. (grapeland or wineland... wine and grape is the same word in swedish ) G) They are my ancestors. And before someone say this, yes Asians found America first. WTF did you think where the indians came from? The sky? Apple: The country Canada or America didn't exist back then so you can't really say that Vikings was the first one to find USA or Canada merely like the first one to discover the continent North america. |

Originally posted by LegionOriginally posted by Ziffski H) Because they were my ancestors, and I think that's cool. I) Because Norse mythology > Other mythology. Honestly, if you're only going to read one mythological story this year, read about when Thor goes fishing. It ilustrates how the vikings understood that good gods can do bad, and vice verca (i.e. the World ain't black/white, it comes in shades). That's an even more advanced picture of the world than what many of today's modern religions display! Oh, and shush, you Swedes. Swedish vikings traveled down the rivers in Russia, Norwegian vikings traveled across the open seas and discovered Iceland, Greenland (aka The biggest publicity stunt in the history of the world), and America. That's so much cooler! (just kiddin' with y'all..) |

Nah, Columbus is bad. He killed the Indians . He was a spainard though right? Eh..I have that in my blood too but he didn't have to show off how he killed indians and stuff. My teacher told us before that we don't get it off because instead of that we either don't get off MLK's birthday. I'd rather have MLK's birthday off than Columbus day.

I think so. Anyone who wanted to royally screw up people who thought the world was flat should be celebrated for forward thinking Whether he was corrupt or not, it's a significant event in American history. I mean, we mark the end of the world wars with events, but not neccessarily celebrations |

Columbus was not a Spaniard. He was sailing for the Spanish king, yes, but he was very much Italian.

So you guys too believe in Vikings? I'm seeing people liking pirates, ninjas and samurais... And nobody praises the Vikings... I mean... They would kick pirate ass any day, and ninjas? They might not be fast enough to kill a ninja, it's not like a ninja can kick a Viking's ass... NOTHING can kick a viking's ass.

Dude, kiwi, I praised them. AGAINST ninjas and pirates. The speed thing is true but everyone knows that a katana or any other ninja weapon has no affect on Viking skin. You might as well be using a a cardboard tube. |

The Vikings were so amazingly hard and tough that they had a religion based on the idea that their world will end in a huge destructive battle in which THEIR GODS LOSE and mostly die in battle, leaving the world a virtual wasteland. These guys saw the world in those fatalistic terms yet still went out and kicked ass. Do you think Christians or Muslims would be so hard and all-conquering if they knew their God was going to get His ass kicked by Satan in the end? (edited by Arwon on 10-08-04 11:25 AM) |

And of course we can expect to see Ziff in here.... YD said awhile ago that it matters to people on the East Coast more than the West Coast. I'm here to say the day doesn't mean a damn thing to me. Ho, ho, I was educated just like the rest of you, I know just how "good" of a guy Columbus was. A lot of people knew full well that the earth was round when Columbus sailed across the sea. In fact, the thought that the earth was flat would get you laughed at more than it would applauded back in Columbus' day. (edited by Grey on 10-08-04 05:17 PM) |

Columbus actually didn't think the world was round, he thought it was shaped like a pear. True story.

The Vikings discovered Newfoundland in Canada. Which is sometimes called Vinland by the people who live there. It is pretty cool up there. Of course, the only thing that can kick a Viking's ass are the Mic-Maq native.
